Summer is here: Council, Aldermen, and commissioners are finishing their last meetings; most students are away; and the pace is slower. But now is the perfect time to be a tourist in your own town. Read this month's Government Matters to learn about re-envisioning downtown, touring re-development sites, and reviewing new rules.

Imagine all the people
Even if you're not a downtown business owner, we hope you'll join Rosemary Imagined, a process that kicks off at 6:30 TONIGHT to begin planning the vision for downtown Chapel Hill's other main street. During the creation of the Town's comprehensive plan, Rosemary Street was identified as an area for a hub for entrepreneurship. The results of the comprehensive plan process are the basis for reevaluating the draft Downtown Framework and Action Plan. Come to Greenbridge's Sky Lounge for information, conversation, and imagination (and light refreshments), and help imagine all the people on Rosemary Street!

New rules: towing and tobacco
There are new rules and regulations regarding towing (in Chapel Hill) and tobacco (county wide). Effective as of yesterday, the revised tow ordinance regulates any non-consensual tow from commercial, non-residential property in the Town of Chapel Hill. A few of the key changes enacted by Council are that tow fees are regulated and capped by the Town; tow lots may not be located more than 15 miles outside of town; and tow zones must be marked with required signage. Find more info and FAQ at www.townofchapelhill.org/towing.
And effective July 1, Orange County will begin enforcement of a Board of Health Rule prohibiting smoking on property owned by Orange County and the municipal governments, including parks, sidewalks, and bus stops. Smoking is also prohibited on private property where the public is invited. For more information about the rule or to find local options smoking cessation options, visit the Board of Health's website or call (919) 245-2480.
