NEON, Inc. Funded Opportunity: EarthCube Summer Institute
Icon for data
Funded by NSF's Geoinformatics program and the EarthCube program, the EarthCube Summer Institute 2013 (ECSITE'13) conducted out of the San Diego Supercomputer Center builds upon eight years of the Cyberinfrastructure Summer Institute for Geoscientists. ECSITE'13 (August 12th - 16th) will provide an introduction to data science concepts and topics, and also cover topics in computational science. Boarding and lodging for five nights/days will be provided on the UCSD campus for attendees from academia, if requested.

Applications are due July 2, 2013
.

This opportunity is clearly relevant to the NEON community if we are to advance the ecological sciences in an ever increasingly data-intensive world. Individuals from member institutions in good standing are eligible to apply for travel within the US to attend ECSITE'13 if your application to the Summer Institute is successful. Two such NEON Inc travel awards will be provided. If you are planning on applying for ECSITE'13 and the travel award, send Brian Wee a copy of your statement of interest as stated in your ECSITE'13 application by July 5 (no exceptions). Applicants for the travel award will be contacted separately on the next steps.

The evaluation procedure for ECSITE'13 and the NEON, Inc. travel awards are distinct processes and are not coordinated. Acceptance into ECSITE'13 is required for consideration for the travel award. There is no guarantee that successful ECSITE'13 applicants who apply for NEON, Inc. travel awards will be provided travel funds.
Nominations for Board Elections Opening Next Week

If you are an individual from a member institution in good standing, you may submit nominations for up to four individuals (including faculty member, research scientist, University employee) from member institutions in good standing .
Announcements from NSF on NEON
NSF Logo
NSF recently released a number of informational items in relation to NEON.

These are related to the articles in News@NEON Summer'13 highlighted above, but are highlighted here for your perusal:
Requests for NIMBioS Support
NimBIOS logo
NIMBioS seeks to promote research across the disciplinary boundaries of the mathematical and biological sciences through synthesis, model development and analysis, and collaboration directed toward addressing important integrative scientific questions. NIMBioS seeks projects that require an interdisciplinary perspective, create new mathematics or involve novel applications of existing mathematics, address particular national needs and foster the development of a cadre of researchers capable of conceiving and engaging in creative and collaborative connections across disciplines.

The next deadline for requests for support for working groups, investigative workshops, and sabbatical fellowships is September 1, 2013, for activities beginning in spring/summer 2014. The deadline is September 1, 2013, for postdoctoral fellowships that start in January through June 2014, but applications for positions starting later in 2014 are also accepted at this time. All letters of recommendation must be submitted before the request deadline.
Resources for Early Career Scientists
Icon.Governance
The following resources may be of interest to our early career scientists:

  • The International Network of Next Generation Ecologists (INNGE, [in-jee]) is a newly established network of ecologists that seeks to bring early career ecologists together from around the world. It is the hope that this will help to strengthen international ties and inspire new activities in a growing global community of ecologists. The Ecological Society of America (a NEON, Inc. Founding Member Institution) is a Member Institution of INNGE.
  • The Early Career Climate Forum is a network of early career climate change researchers and professionals dedicated to improving research and practice through collaboration and communication. Their blogs explore new ideas in climate change science and practice, share the latest research findings and project milestones, and discuss the trials and tribulations of being a graduate student and early career professional.
Solicitations of Potential Interest to the NEON Community
Please click the respective links to check the original source of information.  The abbreviated text below may not reflect amendments to the original announcements, and may not reflect the original intent of the solicitation.

The "New" icons indicate recent new announcements (includes announcements for regular solicitations), and not necessarily new programs.  These are primarily, though not limited to, NSF solicitations.  Not all new announcements are included in the list below.
  • Icon forDoctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (DDIG)
    • Excerpt: The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research for improvement beyond the already existing project. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.

  • Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR)
    • Excerpt:  Advances in the biological sciences are increasingly dependent upon the development of novel instrumentation for collection of new data. The Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR) Program supports the development, production, and distribution of novel instrumentation that addresses demonstrated needs in biological research in areas supported by NSF Biology programs (see http://www.nsf.gov/bio).
    • Critical Dates:   2013-07-31
  • Collections in Support of Biological Research (CSBR)
    • Excerpt:  Biological research collections, including living stock/culture collections and non-living vouchered natural history collections, support many essential research activities in the Biological Sciences. Collections are used to document biodiversity, identify species, recognize climatic shifts, explore alternate energy sources, and improve agricultural, biomedical, and manufacturing applications. The Collections in Support of Biological Research (CSBR) Program provides funds: 1) for improvements to secure, improve, and organize collections that are significant to the NSF BIO-funded research community; 2) to secure collections-related data for sustained, accurate, and efficient accessibility of the collection to the biological research community; and 3) to transfer collection ownership responsibilities.
