Participate in Springtime Citizen Science Activities
|
NEON's Project BudBurst is now offering Citizen Science Academy. The first program of its kind, CSA is meeting the growing need for professional development in citizen science, and provides tools such as online courses, modules and tutorials. A full course list and schedule are available on the CSA website.
Celebrate spring with our 2nd annual Cherry Blossom Blitz from March 1 - April 30! Cherry Blossom Blitz is an easy way to involve people from across the country in a Project BudBurst campaign. Although March and April are targeted for being prime cherry viewing months, you can submit observations anytime cherry trees are active. |
DataONE Releases an R Client |
The DataONE team releases the first version of the DataONE R Client for accessing open data in DataONE from within the R environment for statistical computing. The DataONE R Client provides the ability to access open ecological, environmental, and earth science data from the DataONE network of repositories, and to save data from within R to DataONE repositories that support write access. Because data are accessed via their published, unique identifiers (rather than a local file path), R scripts can be written to be portable across different users, and thus can be more effectively published themselves. |
USDA LTAR Request-for-Information |
On September 10, the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) announced the establishment of a USDA Long Term Agro-ecosystem Research (LTAR) network. The purpose of the LTAR includes sustaining and enhancing agricultural production at large geographical scales to meet increasing demands for agricultural goods and services. The LTAR initially comprises ten USDA ARS sites, three of which are co-located with NEON sites. In September 2012, NEON hosted a workshop at our HQ for the LTAR group to determine areas of alignment between the two environmental observatories.
Now, the ARS requests information from research groups that are interested in becoming formally affiliated with the LTAR Network. This request is limited to those entities that already manage long-term research watersheds, experimental ranges, or other similar sites. Responses are due no later than April 1st, 2013. The USDA will formally announce the names of the sites to be added to the network by October 1st. Criteria for Evaluating a Site's Potential for LTAR Candidacy, 2013. The information provided in response to this RFI will allow the ARS to evaluate candidate sites for inclusion as part of the LTAR Network. |
Sensor and Model Data Interoperability Workshop |
This free workshop provides a unique opportunity to learn how the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) makes sensor and model data available in an interoperable manner. The Sensor and Model Data Interoperability Workshop, to be held 2013-03-26 to 2013-03-28 at Silver Spring, MD, will feature invited speakers and contributed positions, breakout sessions to exchange views and provide proposed approaches. Summaries will be posted on the web. |
