Quote of the week:

"These are the poorest of the poor, they have nothing, they don't have a roof over their heads. How do you turn them away?"

Council of Bishops meets for week of worshipful work

Dear friends in Christ Jesus:

I spent November 2-7 in Oklahoma City where the Council of Bishops met. It was a long haul but I rejoice that at every turn it was bathed in prayer and worship. We engaged in

worshipful work.

Our first engagement together was a Eucharistic Memorial service where we remembered with thanksgiving the bishops and spouses who have joined the church triumphant since we met a year ago. The gavel was passed to Bishop Warner Brown as President and in his first address to the Council he invited us to reaffirm the vows we made at our consecrations, to be accountable, to lead a diverse church and to find common ground to pursue the mission.

Every day began with a service of worship with preaching and the holy meal. Read the Bishop's full letter

A ministry for all people

This is the second in a series of articles about our five West Ohio Conference Advance Specials.

In 1999, the United Methodist Free Store opened on the urban South side of Columbus, Ohio. Its atmosphere of unconditional love and hospitality fostered the dream of a church "for all people" that would be intentionally cross-class, multi-racial and diverse, with a new model of service and worship that was "with" the poor, not just "for" the poor. The United Methodist Church for All People was founded with the mission of being the church at the heart of both community renewal and personal transformation. Community Development for All People was founded the same year. From housing to health to music, its programs provide a model and inspiration for urban ministry and community development across the world, working to improve the quality of life for residents of the South side of Columbus, Ohio.  Read more

Climate change: Why should Christians care?

The West Ohio Creation Care Task Force and the Greater Dayton Christian Connection invite you to a discussion led by Rev. Mitchell Hescox on Nov 13, 7 - 8:30 pm at Christ United Methodist Church. Mitch is a former United Methodist minister and current President/CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN), a ministry dedicated to the care of God's creation. EEN believes that creation care is truly a matter of life and that pollution and climate change harm the vulnerable, especially children and the unborn. God's people should be an example of what the body of Christ can do in the world to solve some of the great challenges of our time.  Learn more

For 18 years, the West Ohio Conference has sponsored the Legal Forum to help churches manage risk. Under the leadership of Conference Chancellor, Phil Moots, and CFO, Bill Brownson, this annual fall event provides an opportunity for church leaders to hear from and talk with legal, financial, insurance and other experts on a variety of matters pertinent to the management of the local church. Motorbikes dedicated in Vietnam

Last spring, Foothills Superintendent, Dennis Miller, took a 5,079 mile motorcycle ride through 11 states, raising funds for new motorbikes for United Methodist pastors in Vietnam. With the $20,525 raised from Miller's 2014 SOLO Ride Across America, the General Board of Global Ministries was able to purchase and deliver 20 new motorbikes to Vietnam. This past October, Bishop Bruce R. Ough, Bishop of Southeast Asia Mission Initiative, dedicated the new bikes in a service in the United Methodist Center in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Roberta Eddy shared some photos and Rev. Joyce Fry reported great joy, singing, and dancing. The bikes will go to United Methodist pastors in the northwest region of Vietnam near China who are starting 80 to 100 new United Methodist churches among the Hmong people.

Saving Wadi Foquin

A Window of Hope in Wadi FoquinA series of opportunities are available this weekend to hear from Ata Manasra, director of the Wadi Foquin Community Development Project, a United Methodist Advance Special Project. Wadi Fouquin is one of the communities slated for removal in the most recent proposed Israeli annexation of Palestinian land. Mr. Manasra is touring in the United States to inform both lawmakers and citizens about the situation in his village. He will be traveling with Ms. Janet Lawr Lewis, a longtime United Methodist missionary who is based in Jerusalem. Their visit to West Ohio is an awareness-building trip sponsored by The United Methodist Church. Learn more

Sandy anniversary

Two years ago, Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc along the east coast of the United States and in the Caribbean. On the anniversary of that storm, Bishop John Schol of the Greater New Jersey Conference writes, "It takes many partners to work on recovery. Today I want to thank our prayer partners whose prayers are the inspiration and strength of our movement. I also am grateful for our volunteers and contributors. Your gifts are making a difference."

Yet after two years, there remain "hidden" Sandy survivors. There are so many stories, so many people still forging a "new normal" that it's impossible to portray them all. Thousands of people are still quietly treading the path back to daily life, even as months stretch into years. Learn more
