Erasing lines between church and neighborhood

This is the first in a series of articles about our five West Ohio Conference Advance Specials.

St. Paul United Methodist Church in Dayton was founded over 130 years ago in the East Dayton community where the Huffy Bicycle Company provided jobs, housing and more for workers and executives. Once a flourishing area, today surrounding the church is a pocket of poverty unmatched anywhere else in Dayton. The church's neighbors are people who are homeless, seeking identity and struggling for survival, yet many still know Jesus as savior and the reason for existence. The response of the St. Paul congregation to the struggles of their neighbors was, in the words of their pastor, Rev. George Brewer, to "Go forth into the highways and byways erasing every line that you can find." Read more.

Remembering Bob Edwards

A true Christian leader in the West Ohio Conference, Robert S. Edwards, died last week in a tragic accident. He will be missed by many across the conference and in particular in the Ohio River Valley area where his passion for Christ led him to positively impact the lives of many people. Please join us in prayer for comfort and peace for Bob's family and friends. A member of Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church, Bob served as treasurer for the Ohio River Valley district and was on the board of the West Ohio Council on Development. Armstrong Chapel Pastor Greg Stover said, "Bob really reflected the love of Christ and when you think about how a person's faith ought to be lived out in relationships, Bob exhibited that in an incredible kind of way."  During the mid-1990's, Bob served as Chairman of the Board of the Cincinnati FreeStore/FoodBank and founded its most popular fundraiser - the Rubber Duck Regatta. He was active in the Boy Scouts and received service awards from many organizations, including the 2010 "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Jefferson Award", the Nobel Prize for public service.  We are forever grateful for Bob's life of Christian service and he will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 22, 11 a.m. at Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church, 5125 Drake Road, Indian Hill, Ohio 45243.  Obituary

2015 Confirmation Camps

West Ohio camps will be hosting two confirmation retreats in 2015, one at Camp Widewater and a second at Camp Wesley. Confirmation retreats are provided as an enhancement to your existing church confirmation program. The retreat setting provides an opportunity to get away and enjoy time with your own and other confirmation groups, attend powerful worship, fellowship and partake of awesome meals together. Teaching sessions offered include spiritual gifts, Wesleyan tradition, covenant relationships in the Bible and "I" Believe", in which students will look at the Apostles Creed and come up with their own belief statements. The weekend away for youth leaders and youth in grades 6-9 will help strengthen their relationship with Christ and appreciate how the church can work together as the body. Find out details here: Camp Widewater Confirmation Camp on February 20-22 and Camp Wesley Confirmation Camp March 20-22

New Madison races for Imagine No Malaria

After a successful 5k race the previous year, New Madison United Methodist Church decided to continue this healthy outreach by partnering with the local hospital wellness program and raising funds for Imagine No Malaria. A true community affair, sponsors and volunteers planned routes, organized water for runners, and enlisted the cooperation of police and emergency workers. As race time grew near, runners and walkers came in running shoes and shorts to enjoy the healthy activity and to fight malaria in Africa. Read more
