Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw President's Message

presidentGreetings!

A hearty THANK YOU to the 71 members who have taken the time to respond to our membership survey. We are gathering excellent information that will help ensure that the AARV Strategic Plan initiatives are matching the needs of our membership. If you haven't filled out the survey, there is still time. In fact, we are giving you the entire year to respond and be entered to win a $25 gift certificate. But, the sooner you complete the survey and are entered, the more chances you will have to win! Please scroll down to see the names of the first 3 winners. We will continue to draw 3 names every quarter in 2015.

Another Thank You to Dr. Alett Mekler from Boston for sending in snow-animal pictures. I hope that spring comes soon for those of you in the Northeast!

Last but certainly not least on the Thank You list this month - Thank You to Dr. Nicole Hardie, Dr. Kristin Jankowski and Dr. Joyce Balnaves for volunteering at the AARV booth at AAHA in Tampa this month and Thank You to Dr. Danielle Anderson-Zydownyk for volunteering at WVC in Las Vegas in February. Look out for future opportunities to work the AARV booth at upcoming conferences - booth volunteers typically receive complimentary conference registration and receive CE.

Speaking of continuing education, the AARV is proud to sponsor a full day of lectures at the upcoming Symposium on Therapeutic Advances in Animal Rehabilitation (STAAR) in New Jersey. Scroll down to learn more about this conference and look for a re-cap of STAAR in our April newsletter.

I look forward to seeing many of you in New Jersey in a few weeks!

Warm regards,

Nominations Open for Board Positions

nominationsThe Board of Directors of AARV has decided to create two new board positions: Membership Chair and University Liaison. These two positions are currently committee chairs rather than board members. Dr. Cara Blake (DVM, DACVS, on faculty at University of Pennsylvania) and Dr. Jamie Peyton (DVM, DACVECC, on faculty at University of California Davis) are currently sharing responsibility for both positions.

To complete this transition, we need your help. Our bylaws require that we open these positions for nominations from the membership even though the committee chair positions are currently filled. If you would like to nominate someone other than Dr. Blake or Dr. Peyton, please reply before Tuesday, April 21, 2015 to info@rehabvets.org.

Congratulations to Our Survey Winners!

surveywinnersCongratulations to the first three winners from our member survey drawing!

Lisa Blanchard, LVT, CMT, CCRP
Trina Legge, RAHT, CCRA
Evelyn Orenbuch, DVM, CCRT, CAVCA

Each winner will receive a $25 gift card to Starbucks or Amazon.

We will continue to randomly select three winners each quarter from survey respondents for a total of 12 winners this year. If you didn't win this time, you are still eligible to win during our next three drawings.

We will send an email with a link to the member survey to all AARV members in mid-May for our next drawing on June 15. If you have already completed the survey, there is no need to retake it unless your information has changed. You will continue to be eligible for our drawings for the rest of the year.

AARV members:
If you haven't taken the survey yet, you can find the link by visiting the Membership Survey page in the Members Area on the AARV website (log-in required).

AARV Technician Liaison

Hello out there to the technician associate members of the AARV! As we all know credentialed veterinary technicians are an integral part to the veterinary physical rehabilitation team. We are often present as a patient takes their first step again or when they graduate from a rehabilitation program. We pour our heart and soul into our profession, often yearning for more information to help our patients.

As the technician associate member liaison, I am here to be your voice. What do you need? What can we do to improve ourselves within the profession? What exciting new trick have you learned to help a patient regain their independence again? Has your practice implemented an innovative program that you would like to share with your colleagues? We want to know and would love to help you share your experiences, case studies or questions.

In addition, there is some exciting news if you have not already heard. An expert group of credentialed veterinary technicians specializing in veterinary physical rehabilitation has formed a nonprofit organization, the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians (proposed). This proposed Academy has taken the first step and submitted a letter of intent to the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. The organizing committee is working diligently to develop guidelines and criteria for recognizing veterinary technicians working in the field of veterinary physical rehabilitation as specialists. With the growing number of diplomates in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and members of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians, a technician specialty academy is needed to support our colleagues.

Interested individuals may contact the organizing committee at vetrehabtechs@gmail.com and stay up-to-date on Application information and educational opportunities through the website www.aprvt.com or Facebook page.

Thank you to AARV member Dr. Alett Mekler of Boston who responded to our request for photos of snow animals. Dr. Mekler provided a look at Boston's record-breaking snowfall, with more than 110" during the 2014-15 season, and its effects on four-legged and two-legged friends, including the city's famous Make Way for Ducklings sculpture at right.

NEW ARTWORK!
AARV Memorial Cards Feature Original New Artwork

AARV has updated its printed memorial cards with original new artwork by artist Carol Lavelle of Hawaii. The new artwork, which was created for AARV, features pawprints, hoofprints and footprints from a variety of animals arranged in a heart.

These memorial cards may be sent to clients of your practice as an expression of sympathy from your staff. The card indicates that you have made a donation to AARV as a way of honoring the life of their companion animal.

The inside of the cards contains blank space to allow you to personalize the card and the statement "This gift will support AARV's mission by providing opportunities for education and collaboration among veterinary professionals to introduce, educate, develop, and nurture the practice of rehabilitation in veterinary medicine and animal care."

Cards come with matching envelopes and are sold in sets of 10 cards for $105 and 25 cards for $255 including shipping and handling to U.S. addresses. For international shipments, sets of 10 cards are $125 and sets of 25 cards are $275, including shipping and handling.

Visit the Products page of the AARV website to order these memorial cards online.
