Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw President's Message

presidentGreetings!

I hope that your 2015 is off to a good start! For those of you in the Northeast, I hope you are staying safe and warm in the snow. Just for fun, send us your pictures of any snowmen or better, snow animals, and we will feature the best entries in March's email newsletter!

(Send pictures to kristinkirkby@gmail.com)

Following up on my last message, I want to reiterate that the AARV BOD is working hard to carry out the initial phases of our Strategic Plan. Part of this Plan is that we NEED to learn more about you in order to ensure the Strategic Plan is guiding us in the right direction.

We will be conducting a survey of all of our members this year to gather basic information and answer questions such as: "What percentage of our membership is also a member of the IVAPM?" This question is relevant because we are working toward partnerships with other organizations that share similar missions and visions, such as the IVAPM, in order to advance common goals.

Why taking the survey is worth 5 minutes of your time:

  • Four times this year (approximately every 3 months) we will send an email to all AARV members (veterinarians, technicians, students and affiliate members) with a link to a short Survey Monkey. The same survey will be sent each time in order to capture results from new members who join throughout the year.  Unless your information changes throughout the year, you only need to complete the survey once.

  • Three weeks after the survey is sent out we will draw 3 names randomly from members who completed the survey.

  • Winners of the drawing will receive a $25 gift certificate to Starbucks or Amazon!

  • Members will remain eligible for future drawings if they do not win. Note: BOD members are not eligible to win. Vets, techs, students and affiliates are all eligible to win.

  • There will be a total of 12 winners this year.

  • We will present the results of the survey at NAVC 2016.

Look out for an email from the AARV in the next 2 weeks that has the link to the survey, and please take the time to complete it!

We are still looking for members who are interested in speaking at their local VMA meetings as part of our goal of increasing awareness of the field of veterinary rehabilitation and the AARV. Thank you to our volunteers from North Carolina (Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little), Missouri (Dr. Kara Amstutz), and Washington/Idaho (Dr. Jessica Bunch)!

If YOU are interested in being considered as a speaker in your or another state, please send your name and state (states) in which you would speak, as well as potential rehabilitation topics to AARV Legislative Liaison Kristyn Richardson (rehabvetdoc@gmail.com).

In closing, I would like to remind those of you submitting snow animal pictures that at least one of the judges of the pictures is a Seahawks fan, so images that include Patriots paraphernalia are discouraged.

Sincerely,

SPORTS MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION PRACTICES: FROM START-UP TO SUCCESS. PART 1: STARTING A REHABILITATION PRACTICE - THERE'S MORE TO REHABILITATION THAN AN UNDERWATER TREADMILL!

Rosemary J. LoGiudice, DVM, CCRT, CVA, CVSMT, member CoAC

Physical Rehabilitation is mainstream therapy for conditioning, pre-and post-orthopedic surgical procedures and for recovery from neurological incidents in the human medical field. This first part of a two-part lecture will discuss why physical rehabilitation should be considered to be part of any veterinary practice, whether directly within a practice, or by referral to a veterinarian trained in rehabilitation. SPORTS MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION PRACTICES: FROM START-UP TO SUCCESS. PART 2: CANINE SPORTS MEDICINE PRACTICE

M. Christine Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR, CVSMT

Canine sports medicine is the art and science of providing expertise in the structural, physiological, medical and surgical needs of athletic dogs and the restoration of normal form and function after injury or illness. HEMATOLOGIC AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN WORKING DOGS: WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Joe Spoo, DVM, CCRT

This presentation examines the literature that exists looking at the physiological changes of working dogs and canine athletes. In addition, a number of papers have looked at the job of search and rescue dogs, their impact and the hazards they encounter during and after their time in the field. Continue reading ...

INTEGRATIVE SPORTS MEDICINE: ASSESSING THE NEEDS OF THE PATIENT AND CLIENT

M. Christine Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR

Veterinary medicine is unique in the medical field because our patients and our clients are separate individuals with which we have different types of relationships. This has the potential to complicate our diagnostic, assessment and treatment abilities, because there are three individuals relating to each other in very different ways: the veterinarian, the client and the patient. VITAMIN D LEVELS IN SLED DOGS: IS THE HUMAN PANDEMIC A CAUSE FOR CONCERN IN OUR CANINE ATHLETES?

Joe Spoo, DVM, CCRT

There is widespread concern for inadequate Vitamin D concentration in the human population. In particular a large body of research exists showing evidence for increased performance with increased Vitamin D status as well as a host of issues, from decreased performance, injury to infection, that are associated with decreased Vitamin D concentrations. QUANTITATIVE DIFFERENCES IN GAITS OF BORDER COLLIES AND LABRADOR RETRIEVERS: RELATIONSHIP TO BREED FUNCTION

M. Christine Zink DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR, Sherman O. Canapp Jr., DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR

Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, an activity that requires quickness and acute, accurate changes in direction as dogs move sheep across varied terrain. In contrast, Labrador Retrievers were bred to run straight to the location of shot and downed game, retrieve the birds, and return directly to the hunter. Continue reading ...

THE EFFECT OF INCLINATION AND DECLINATION ON CANINE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION

Devon Spencer, DVM, CCRP

Our patients have the benefit of being quadrupeds. They naturally stand with 30% of their weight on each thoracic limb and 20% on each pelvic limb. The ability to quantify the angle of standing incline or decline needed to redistribute weight bearing through a dog's limbs will help to govern future therapeutic exercises used to encourage our canine patients to redistribute their weight in a more normal pattern after injury. CENTRE OF PRESSURE AND FOOT PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION AS OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT TOOLS OF POSTURAL STABILITY IN DOGS DURING REHABILITATION

Constanza Gómez Álvarez, DVM, PhD, MRCVS (left); Aliah Shaahen, BEng PhD

Postural stability is of great importance in determining functional recovery from neurological injury in human patients, for example, following stroke. Standing postural parameters obtained in a pressure mat currently used in humans are body centre of pressure (COP) and foot pressure distribution asymmetry. Continue reading ...
