2015 ROBERT M. COARD INNOVATION AWARD WINNER: TED EDLICH

Ted Edlich
Ted Edlich, former CEO of TAP (Total Action for Progress) in Roanoke, Virginia, will be presented with the Robert M. Coard Innovation Award at the Community Action Partnership Annual Convention in San Francisco.  The presentation will be part of the Awards Gala on Thursday, August 27.

The Award is named after Robert (Bob) Coard, the long-time, visionary President and CEO of Boston ABCD, the Community Action Agency in Boston, MA.

Ted Edlich joined TAP in 1968, serving as Head Start Director, then moved into Director of Community Organization, then Director of Training.  In 1975, Edlich was selected as the president of TAP.  He retired as CEO on January 31, 2015 and continues to work as a consultant, speaker, and writer.

Edlich served on Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder's Poverty Commission and Governor Gilmore's Commission on Child and Mental Health.  He has been an Instructor and Guest Lecturer at several universities and colleges, including University of Virginia, University of West Virginia, and others in the region.

Edlich has held more than a dozen leadership positions in national, regional, state and local organizations.  He has published articles on community development and is in the process of completing a book entitled: Navigating the Nonprofit Rapids: Strategies and Tactics for Running a Nonprofit Company, which will be published in spring, 2016.

Under Edlich's leadership, TAP and its many innovative programs, have been recognized by social advocacy organizations, news programs and magazines (Ebony and National Geographic).

Some of TAP's programs include Project Discovery a statewide college access program for minority and low-income students, CHIP, a statewide primary care program for children, Transition Living Center for the homeless, Dumas Center for Artistic Development - the conversion of a historic black hotel into a modern theater housing the Roanoke Children's Theater, and This Valley Works, a workforce development center for youth and adults featuring programs that include Youth Build, Father's First, GED preparation, and Center for Employment and Training.

Even though he is "retired," Edlich is never far from Community Action. In addition to receiving the Robert M. Coard Innovation Award, he will be presenting two workshop sessions in San Francisco: "Isn't it Time You Wrote a Book about Your Life and Work,"  (8/27 at 2:00 pm in Pacific H) and "Mindfulness and the Work of Community Action"(8/26 at 1:30 pm in Sierra A).

Edlich's passion for Community Action is evident:  "The goal of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, pledging to help all Americans fully participate in our society by ensuring that everyone have (1) the opportunity for education and training, (2) the opportunity to work and (3) the opportunity to live in decency and dignity stands alongside the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and endowed with the inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Community Action has been an important means to make that happen. "

Edlich concludes with a sentiment that so many feel about this amazing network:   "Ours is more than a job.  It is a sacred calling. I'm forever amazed at the incredible work done by my Community Action colleagues across this country.  My only regret is that I do not have another forty years to learn from all of them ways to enrich the work of the agency I dearly love."

Congratulations to Ted Edlich on receiving the 2015 Robert M. Coard Innovation Award.  We look forward to having you with us in San Francisco later this month!

EmergingPracticesEMERGING PRACTICES SUMMIT HOSTED BY LCRC

As we shared in yesterday's enews, the Learning Communities Resource Center (LCRC) is hosting an Emerging Practices Summit.  Currently, the Summit is limited to members of two of our Learning Clusters: 1) Bundling Services to Improve Outcomes, and 2) Decreasing Family Homelessness Cluster Groups.  This limitation is due to size constraints. The event will be held September 28-29, 2015 in the Washington DC area and will provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning and technical assistance with subject matter experts in the relative topic areas. Twenty participants will be selected to receive a $900 stipend to support travel and lodging expenses.

While currently space is being held for Cluster members who have been focused on these projects for the past 18 months, LCRC staff are creating a waiting list for those not a member of the two cluster groups, or of the Learning Community, who are interested in attending the Summit. If you would like to be added to the waiting list, or have further questions, please contact Sonji Dawson Johnson at [email protected]

RISK2 PART WEBINAR SERIES ON RISK ASSESSMENT PROCESS

July 23 and August 13

 2:00 ET/1:00 CT/12:00 MT/11:00 PT

Are you concerned with how to get started with COE-developed CSBG Organizational Standard 4.6 "An organization-wide, comprehensive, risk assessment has been completed within the past 2 years and reported to the governing board"? Once you have completed a risk assessment, do you know what the next steps are?

Join Community Action Partnership and the Nonprofit Risk Management Center for a two part webinar series to think about the process around using the online risk assessment tool. Learn about how to initiate a risk assessment, what staff should participate, likely documents and preparation work to have on hand, and how to organize the follow-up process.

These webinars are free, but pre-registration is required.  You may sign up for one or both of the webinars, though it is suggested that you attend both. These webinars are spaced a few weeks apart so that you could learn about the process in July, begin your risk assessment between the webinars, and ask specific follow-up questions in August.

WEBINAR SERIES FROM CAPLAW

Join CAPLAW for this two part webinar series!

The employer mandate is in effect for many larger employers, but many employers still have questions.  Through two one-hour webinars, we will examine specific compliance issues surrounding the employer mandate, focusing first on how to identify who is full-time employee covered by the mandate and then on how to meet the new reporting requirements, using new IRS Forms 1094 and 1095.  Because these webinars are not intended as general overviews of the employer mandate/reporting requirements, we recommend attendees review the information provided on CAPLAW's website.

Part 1: Determining if Individuals are Full-Time Employees under the Employer Mandate

Tuesday, August 11, 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

Wondering how to determine whether particular CAA staff members are considered full-time employees under the ACA and whether employer mandate assessments will apply if health coverage is not offered?  Our first webinar will help CAAs apply the employer mandate rules by explaining how those rules apply to a number of common CAA situations, including Head Start staff who are laid off during the summer and individuals enrolled in job training programs.  Attendees will learn how to address a number of key situations in applying the employer mandate and basic rules for addressing other situations.

Part 2: Understanding the Employer Mandate's Reporting Requirements

Wednesday, August 12, 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT

Concerned about which of the new IRS reporting requirements under the employer and individual mandates apply to you?  What data do you need collect?  When do you need to submit and deliver the new forms?  How do you complete those forms?  Our second webinar will discuss these new reporting requirements, focusing primarily on IRS Forms 1094-C and 1095-C forms, as well as key issues to be aware of when collecting information and reporting.  Attendees will leave this webinar with a framework for meeting the new requirements as they begin to examine the new forms and instructions.

Thursday, September 17, 2015; 2-3pm Eastern
Recipients of the CED/CED-HFFI grant often need various types of funding: equity, debt and grants, to invest in the necessary property, equipment and/or resources to expand impact in their community.  There are typically three options: (1) wait to raise all of the necessary funds from public grants, donations, and foundations; (2) approach a conventional lender viewing you through the lens traditional lending criteria; or, (3) seek funding from both sources, an integrated finance approach that can leverage public funds to access all funding sources available.  This webinar brings together a panel of financial experts and grantees offering perspectives on an integrated finance approach to leverage grants.

Speakers:
  • Bob Porter, Director Business Advising and Lending, Pacific Community Ventures
  • Brahm Ahmadi, President, People's Community Market
