If Jeff hasn't done it, then it hasn't been done at Chart!
Jeff started his career at MVE/Chart over 36 years ago, just before high school graduation, as a plasma cutter in the LPV line. Since then he has worked on the LPV and trailer assembly lines, as a supervisor in the plant, in field service, repair, and now as a technical service representative (which he says is a lot like field service, without having to kneel on the cold concrete). Although his main focus is the beverage product line, he also is a back-up technical expert for the industrial line. He pretty much knows the Distribution & Storage Group products inside and out, literally! He also suggests and writes the Carbo Tip of the Quarter for this publication.
Jeff grew up on a farm, and he and his wife maintain a hobby farm where he says, "We raise our own chickens and have a big garden." They have five children ranging in age from 13 to 26.
When Jeff isn't at Chart he enjoys bow hunting, fishing, bowling, and country music.
Jeff likes working with Chart's customers and the variety of questions and challenges that come his way every day. He looks forward to using his extensive knowledge to help with your product questions or concerns.

Regulatory Codes/Guidelines
|
Over the last year several national codes have been released or updated relating to beverage CO2 bulk tank installations, and many state and local jurisdictions are now following these requirements. Delays in new installations, or non-compliance citations on current installations, can be avoided by identifying the local and state regulations and taking proactive steps to insure your installation is in compliance.
Two of the primary national codes are the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (NBIC). The current codes can be purchased directly from the NFPA and NBIC through their sites linked below.
In addition, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) also publishes recommended guidelines for small bulk carbon dioxide installations and filling of high pressure carbon dioxide cylinders. First, log onto the CGA Publication Website. Then click on "Shop for Publications" and select the following IDs or click on the links below.
Starting in January 2014 McDonalds® will publish revised installation guidelines. The new process will require installation certification training to be completed for distributors authorized to install McDonald's® bulk CO2 tanks.

Carbo Tip of the Quarter
Difference Between
Carbo-Max™ and Carbo-Mizer®
Bulk CO2 Tanks
by Jeff Wick, Technical Service Representative
|
It is important to understand the operational difference between Chart/MVE's Carbo-Max ™ and Carbo-Mizer ® Bulk CO 2 Tanks. Per Chart/MVE classifications, the Carbo-Max Bulk CO 2 Tank utilizes liquid withdrawal and the Carbo-Mizer Bulk CO 2 Tank utilizes gas withdrawal.
The Carbo-Max™ Bulk CO2 Tanks draw liquid (liquid withdrawal) from the inner vessel up through an internal vaporizer coil which is soldered to the outer shell. The liquid carbon dioxide is vaporized to gas and dispensed directly out to the gas use supply regulator. This type of tank has an economizer regulator (pressure relief) that takes excess head space gas pressure and delivers it directly into the gas supply line until the pressure is reduced to the set point of the regulator.
The Carbo-Mizer® Bulk CO2 Tanks take carbon dioxide gas (gas withdrawal) from the tank head space and sends it directly to the gas use supply regulator. The tank pressure is maintained with a pressure building circuit which takes liquid from the bottom of the tank into the PB coil, vaporizes it, and returns the gas through the pressure building regulator to the top of the tank until the set point of the regulator is reached. It is important not to overdraw Carbo-Mizer Bulk CO2 Tanks faster than the pressure builder circuit can maintain pressure in the tank head space as there is risk of low tank pressure, causing the carbon dioxide to convert to dry ice inside the tank. This type of carbon dioxide bulk tank should not be used for high flow applications, unless carbon dioxide is supplied via the liquid withdrawal port on the tank and attached to an external vaporizer.
