Amgen & Genentech Push for State Legislation
to Limit Generics
Andrew Pollack at The New York Times reports that Amgen and Genentech have been sponsoring legislation at a number of states that would prevent pharmacists from being allowed to swiftly substitute a less expensive biosimilar, already winning one vote in the Virginia House of Delegates. In some cases pharmacists would be required to notify a physician ahead of a substitution, or consult with the patient about the switch. Pollack also notes a federal offensive under way to prevent a biosimilar from having the same generic name as the branded treatment, offering another hurdle on the path to substitutions ... Read more

The new company is named NantOmics. it is funded by Soon-Shiong's California Capital Equity group, as Bloomberg reported. Nantomics will develop a library of kinase inhibitors that could home in on multiple mutations that drive cancers regardless of where tumors reside in the body. He regained control of the kinase inhibitors from biopharma powerhouse Celgene ($CELG). Celgene sold the library to Soon-Shiong after picking it up in its $2.9 billion acquisition of Abraxis, a 2010 deal struck primarily for the reformulated chemo drug Abraxane. .... Read more
