SoCalBio-Championed and Co-Authored Grant Proposal for Developing National Biomanfacturing Training Standards Won $15 Million from US Department of Labor

 

The grant brings about $2 Million to Los Angeles, which will be administered by LA valley College to train the bioscience workforce of the future


training The three-year project establishes the Community College Consortium for Biosciences Credentials and will develop core bioscience competencies in laboratory skills, bio-manufacturing and medical devices, and introduces stackable and latticed credentials to help trade-impacted workers get new jobs. Certificates will include core biosciences skills, core laboratory skills, core medical device skills, biomedical plastics, and environmental monitoring.

The Los Angeles component of this grant project was initiated and developed by the Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio), the trade association f the bioscience industry in Los Angeles, Orange County and adjacent communities in the Inland Empire and Gold Coast of California. 

Through its Workforce Development Committee, SoCalBio coordinated this grant project nationally in collaboration with Consortium members, such as Forsyth College in North Carolina and NBC2 in Maine, and regionally with endorsements from a partnership including, in addition to LAVC, the City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board, California Employment Development Department, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, and Grifols Biologicals.
