SoCalBio Announces Leadership Changes
 
RobG During its quarterly meeting at AMI - USC on Sept. 5, The SoCalBio Board of Directors formally elected Second Sight's President & CEO Robert Greenberg, PhD, MD (photo right), as Chairman of SoCalBio for a two-year term ending on September 2014. Dr. Greenberg's company Second Sight Medical Products in Sylmar is a leading ophthalmic R&D company developing an implantable retina to restore some vision to patients blinded by retinitis pigmentosa. The company is awaiting FDA approval of this first-of-its-kind implant device.

JLasch SoCalBio Board Members also elected AMI-USC's Director Jonathan Lasch, PhD (photo right), to the position of Vice Chairman also for a two-year term ending in September 2014. Located on the campus of the University of Southern California, AMI - USC is an organization that  bridges the gap between biomedical invention and the creation of commercially successful medical products that improve and save lives.
 
"We are pleased to serve and help in fulfilling SoCalBio's mission as the voice of the biotech and medical device communities in Los Angeles, Orange County and the adjacent communities on the Inland Empire and the Gold Coast of California," said Dr. Greenberg. "We will continue to lead the hard work to ensure that the region's bioscience industry reach its full potential."

SoCalBio Adds Two More Board Members

 

During its quarterly meeting at AMI - USC on September 5, SoCalBio Board Members voted to add Kirsten Detrick of Amgen (Thousand Oaks) and Sean Caffey, MD, of Replenish and MiniPumps (Pasadena) to the organization's Board of Directors.
 

KirstenD Kirsten is Executive Director of Marketing at Amgen Inc., a leading human therapeutics company in Southern California.   Most recently, Kirsten was Brand Lead for Prolia (denosumab), a first-in-class human monoclonal antibody for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Kirsten joined Amgen in 2004 as Senior Director of Enbrel Rheumatology Sales and Marketing, leading a team of over 100 Amgen sales and marketing professionals in a joint venture/co-promote structure with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.  Prior to joining Amgen, Kirsten was with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). From 2002-2004, she supervised the Plavix US primary care marketing team, in a joint venture with Sanofi-Synthelabo. Plavix prescriptions grew +30%, to $2.9 billion during Kirsten's tenure.  Kirsten began her career at BMS in 1991 with the Worldwide Consumer Medicines Division, working on OTC drugs including Excedrin, Bufferin, and Nuprin.  These consumer-marketing experiences formed the foundation for her subsequent career contributions in direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising for Plavix, Vanlev, Enbrel, and Prolia.  Kirsten earned her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in chemistry from Middlebury College and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

 

SeanC Sean Caffey,MD, has been CEO of Replenish, Inc. since co-founding the company in August 2007. He has over ten years of experience with medical device and drug delivery startup companies in ophthalmology and neurosciences. He holds an MBA from USC Marshall School of Business and MD from USC Keck School of Medicine. Sean previously worked as the Director of Business Development at the USC / Caltech Engineering Research Center for Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems (BMES) where he recruited 18 medical and pharma companies to join the USC Medical School's BMES center since 2003. While on staff at the USC Keck School of Medicine and the USC Department of Biomedical Engineering, he was a part time employee for the US Army's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) where he represented the US Department of Defense to select and assist in commercializing innovative biomedical technologies for troops abroad.
