Today, we bring you the latest Skillselect report that contains increased ceilings for many occupations and an article from the Australian newspaper regarding the wait ahead for the old 885 and 886 visa applicants caught in the backlog.

Occupation Ceiling increased from March 1st, 2014

The latest Skillselect report shows an increased occupational ceilings across many professions. According to the information available on the department
website they conducted an evaluation of occupational ceilings in late 2013 and based on feedback received as part of the evaluation, the following changes are in place since 1 March 2014:

  • State and territory nominated visas will no longer be subject to occupational ceiling limitations
  • The minimum ceiling for each occupational group will be 1000 invitations.

Due to continued high levels of interest from prospective skilled migrants in the following six occupations, pro rata arrangements for these occupational groups will continue:

  • Chemical and Materials Engineers
  • Electronics Engineers
  • Other Engineering Professionals
  • ICT Business and Systems Analysts
  • Software and Applications Programmers
  • Telecommunications Engineering Professionals.

The total ceilings for the above professions will remain the same for the rest of the financial year 2013-14.

Invitation rounds will be held on the second and fourth Monday of each month for the rest of the year unlike the first and the third as before.

The table below last reviewd on 20th of March, 2014 shows the occupation ceilings for the 2013-2014 programme year for each occupation on the Occupation Lists identified by the four-digit ANZSCO code unit group, and the number of invitations issued for each occupation in the current programme year to date:

No respite for skilled PR applications in limbo lodged by cooks and hairdressers                                                             business_conference6.jpg
THERE is no deadline for a decision in the skilled migration cases of thousands of "warehoused" former overseas students, the immigration department says, according to The Australian. You can read the full story here.

It's been a frustrating few years with the DIBP taking their time to process the backlog of the old GSM files. Despite the media remarks, they are certainly not all cooks and hairdressers.

Still many did get lucky this year and received their residency so I can only say for those stuck in limbo, don't give up, next financial year is likely to be your turn.
