Values and Ethics in SoulCollage
by Kylea Taylor

Life feels more nurturing when we feel those around us want us to be creative, want us to succeed at giving our own unique gifts, and want to include us. We blossom when we feel encouraged to follow our intuition and work cooperatively.

Most of us are looking for an environment where we are encouraged to do what we value doing and are able do it in a way that also feels harmonious with our values and allows us to care for ourselves and others. It is wonderful when we are able to find other people who want the same and to be able to support them too.

People making cards 1

A SoulCollage group often provides such an environment:

  •  You are sitting at a table, leafing through magazines, watching for images that ask you to pick them.
  • Music is playing softly in the background.
  •  Others in the room are quietly looking, cutting, gluing or sharing a wonderful image   they've found; they, too, are deep in their creative process.
  • You do a double take as you turn to an image, don't know why it has called to you, but you trust your intuition and tear it out.
  • When you have collected a few more, you pick up a frame that you can hold over the image to see what part of it you want to use.
  • You find a background for it and start to cut the image.
  • The Facilitator passes behind you, catches your eye, and smiles encouragingly.
  • You start gluing the background, then the main image, onto a 5" x 8" mat board card, maybe adding a few more images.
  • You feel so satisfied. You are not sure what it all means yet, but it feels like you have expressed something important, and you really like your SoulCollage card. You can't stop looking at it.
  • Later, you will do the SoulCollage "I Am One Who..." exercise with your new card to let it introduce itself. Your experience will be honored, and the group and the Facilitator will also appreciate your card.

As we go home from our first workshop and establish a personal practice of making SoulCollage people.cards.table cards and using our decks to ask and answer our life's questions, we are more and more able to honor the diversity in ourselves, all our parts for which we have made a card, even the challenging ones, like our Inner Judge or Critic.

When we can honor diversity in ourselves, we already have gained the ability to honor all those parts in others. Again, even the challenging parts. Seena Frost, founder of SoulCollage and author of SoulCollage Evolving, models for us how to encourage each other, how to expand our receptivity to abundance and operate cooperatively and non-competitively. As we continue to connect with each other in Trainings and Conferences, and in online groups and classes, we learn to value our own and others' intuition and trust intuition to help guide our lives. With each experience we learn better how to trust others, to trust community.

Creativity was the first universal value of what came to be the SoulCollage community. Practicing SoulCollage seems to have uncovered other values we have realized we all share: uniqueness, abundance, mutual encouragement and acceptance of others, non-competitiveness, intuition, and inclusiveness.

When we put our values into practice, our actual actions are usually ethical -- that is they have a moral consistency that takes into account the effect of our actions on others and on the networks of people with whom they are in relationship, too. SoulCollage Facilitators have been a community for ten years.

SoulCollage Facilitators are people who love SoulCollage and appreciate its values. They completed the SoulCollage Facilitator Training in order to share SoulCollage with others and join the community of Facilitators. There are now 1896 trained Facilitators in 33 countries. It is great to think of those values spreading around the world while people have fun being creative in community.

Ethics is the fascinating material out of which the best movies and TV series are made. Ethical  dilemmas thread through the kind of stories book clubs love to discuss. We will be using vignettes of such stories so you can take on a common ethical challenge as a group and learn the model of ethics described in Kylea's book, The Ethics of Caring. This model uses the chakra system to help us sort out our tangles of counter-transference and transference with self-compassion and learn to avoid or extricate ourselves from the common ethical dilemmas based on money, sex and power, and also the more subtle and difficult ones involving transformative and transpersonal work with clients. Special attention will be paid to ethics in SoulCollage Selene.Vega practice. This course meets the requirement for 6  Law & Ethics CEUs in California for MSWs and MFTs. Selene and Kylea have worked together for many years to present this ethical model.
