Suzette de Araujo Headshot
And just like that, it is the middle of September! We are waiting the cool, crisp breezes of fall and enjoying being outside for class. With the change of season, and the new year, have you tried something new yet? Have you put into practice an idea you've read here? Hopefully so! If not, I hope that you find something new you can try in this edition. Happy reading and enjoy the outdoor weather while we have it!

Your FYI editor,
Suzette de Araujo
A message from your president...

Dear Colleagues;

Do you CRINGE every time you hear the word LITERACY? For example: LITERACY in Language Arts. (This sooo makes me think of testing) How about ANOTHER one I came across in reading/listening....NUMERACY? Did you ever? It used to be: I understand the MATH!

The last few years, as Physical Educators, we have been introduced to: PHYSICAL LITERACY, but CAN YOU DEFINE IT???

Well, here are a few definitions OR LESSON 101
*Physical literacy is the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person. (SHAPE America)
*Individuals who are physically literate move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person. (Physical and Health Education Canada)
*Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life (PISE - Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence)

EVERYONE of US needs "to march to the beat of this newer drum" as it will define you as a teacher and the outcomes or results you see in your students as a result of your teaching.

REFLECTION: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got!" (McConnell Foundation)

NOW IS THE TIME to look inward at creating your lessons/activities!

CHECKLIST:              (annotated from Active For Life)
*   Do your students all look forward to your H/PE class? Are you well prepared and enthusiastic?
*   Are your lessons well planned, include a wide variety of activities, and meet state DOE learning outcomes?
*   Are you using a variety of assessment tools?
*   Are your activities age and developmentally appropriate
*   Is there emphasis on student learning, personal success, fair play and personal health?

PHYSICAL LITERACY LINKS:

If you DID NOT WATCH the video "NO RUNNING" whose link was in the last FYI, I beseech you ALL to find 40 minutes of well-spent time watching it! THIS will SPARK a new flame not only for your teaching, but advocating for more Physical Activity in your building and district.

ENJOY YOUR LAST TWO WEEKS OF SEPTEMBER!

MY VERY BEST,

Christine Baccarella

NJs most awarded teachers...congratulations NJAHPERD's High School Teacher of the Year, Mark Friedrich!
It's time for New Jersey's 1.4 million students to head back to school - and what better way to welcome them back than to recognize teachers who have worked tirelessly for their students.

Donna M. Chiera, president of the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey and a retired special education teacher from Perth Amboy, said truly great teachers possess several key traits.

"A great teacher should have mastery of their subject matter so they know the content they are teaching and a commitment to lifelong learning so they continue to grow professionally combined with an understanding of childhood and adolescent development," Chiera said. "These traits contribute to the ability to inspire and encourage the next generation of students to become healthy engaged citizens and future leaders." MORE
Did you know that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act that commits to creating equal opportunities for all students? Along with setting high standards for preparing all students for future success in college and careers, ESSA also highlights the importance of health and physical education as part of a well-rounded education.

This reaffirms something we all believed to be true - healthy kids learn better - and now schools can use national education funding to support health education and physical education. Share the good news.

As students stream back toward Harvard Yard for the academic year, a prominent professor is raising a provocative question for them to debate: Given that many of you are not as active as you should be for your own well-being, should the university bring back a phys-ed requirement? If Harvard does adopt phys ed for all, it could help turn the long-running tide of universities dropping the requirements, said Bradley Cardinal, a SHAPE America member and professor of kinesiology at Oregon State University. A sweeping study he and colleagues published in 2013 in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport found that only about 40 percent of universities have them now. MORE
Strategies to Improve the Quality of PE and Physical Activity Opportunities in Your School

September represents the bittersweet end of summer and a fresh start for children and parents alike. What my children and I will miss most about our summer may come as a surprise - we will miss moving. We will miss the outdoor play of summer as we trade it in for indoor classrooms with desks in rows. While I know there will be time for physical education and recess, it won't be the same." MORE

Billion Mile Race Contest for NJAHPERD Members!

Have you heard about our friends at the Billion Mile Race who are challenging America's schools to walk and run a collective billion miles? We think that's a pretty cool goal and hope that your school will help them reach it. 188 New Jersey schools are already in the Race and we'd love to see that number grow.

Joining the Billion Mile Race is free and easy, and participating schools are eligible for exciting grants and prizes, including a special offer exclusively for NJAHPERD members: join by September 30, 2016, and you'll be entered into a drawing to win a Fender Speaker System for your school!

Here's how it works:
  1. Take two minutes to register your school, here. For the question "How Did You Hear About the New Balance Foundation Billion Mile Race?" make sure to choose NJAHPERD.
  2. Wait to hear if your school has won!

You can read the official rules here. If you have any questions, you can reach the team at BillionMileRace@tufts.edu. We look forward to seeing New Jersey schools leading the charge toward 1 billion miles!
