EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the 2015 96th Annual Convention!

As I complete my second and final term, as your NJAHPERD President, I want to thank you all for supporting my themes, "Advocacy on the Move" and "Advocacy Moving Forward". One of the most rewarding experiences has been sharing my passion for our profession with legislators and policy makers. Joined by nine NJAHPERD members, we shared that passion together at SHAPE America's annual SPEAK Out! Day on The Hill on February 11th! NJAHPERD representatives were Lois Joyce, Ted Olsen, Ellie Abdi, Grace Kaler, Jamie Julian, John Smith, Maureen Nussman, Jackie Malaska, and me. SHAPE America had a total of 120 participants, representing 37 states. This was the largest delegation in the eight years since the program's inception. We visited with eight legislative assistants/correspondents from the offices of Senators Menendez and Booker, Representatives Rodney Frelinghuysen (District 11), Chris Smith (District 4), Albio Sires (District 8), Bonnie Watson Coleman (District 12), Tom MacArthur (District 3), and Scott Garrett (District 5).

All the Congressional Aides we saw listened, asked questions and gave positive reactions to our messages from New Jersey. However, NO ONE at this point has agreed to sign on as a co-sponsor to the PHYSICAL ACT (Physical Education and Health Education be listed as Core Academic Subjects) Senate Bill S -418 (Udall) or the House Bill (Fudge), except for Representative Donald Payne (District 10). Our other ASKS were to support the PEP Grant as a stand alone program authorized within the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and include the definition of well-rounded education within the Act.

A BIG thank you to all our members who emailed or called your Senators and District Representatives prior to our visit or the day of our visit to The Hill. I would appreciate your continued support over the next two weeks to keep our Federal Officials informed by continuing to send those Action Alert Letters through SHAPE America's Legislative Action Center. I will continue to follow up with all of the representatives with whom we spoke regarding our ASKS over the next two weeks on your behalf.

On our State home front, NJAHPERD's Teacher Certification K-6 Bill Senate Bill S- 2245 (Barnes/Allen) is waiting to be heard on the full Senate Floor for a vote. Our Legislative Consultant, Jennifer Sullivan, Esq., has asked Senator Barnes to speak with Senate President Sweeney to post the Bill for a vote in the full Senate in March and she has also sent a letter on behalf of NJAHPERD for Senator Sweeney to do the same.

Our Legislative Consultant has also had a conversation with Assemblyman Peterson regarding the Recess Bill K-5 Assembly Bill A-4044 (Peterson/Lagana). Assemblyman Peterson would like to move the Bill forward and will be requesting Chairman Diegnan to post the Bill for a vote in the Assembly Education Committee (NJAHPERD will be giving oral testimony).

Please continue to let your voices "RING OUT" here in New Jersey so the whole child is ensured a quality physical education and health education program. You do have the power to help all of our students in New Jersey and that is what we are all about "EVERY CHILD STRONGER - EVERY LIFE LONGER".

It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve all my NJAHPERD family over these past two years and I will continue to advocate for our students and quality health and physical education as your Past President.

Sincerely yours,

JoAnn Doherty

NJAHPERD President

Minnesota bill would update phys ed standards for students, require testing

Kids' exercise guidelines need more focus on brain development
Reuters
Sports medicine experts say physical activity guidelines for kids should address the best types of exercise, not just the duration. Most guidelines recommend that kids and teens get 60 minutes each day of moderate to vigorous exercise. Many don't specify what kind, but imply that aerobics should be the focus, with additional "strength training" three times per week. An hour of aerobic exercise may promote aerobic fitness and muscle strength, but not necessarily motor skill development, socialization or having fun, the authors write. MORE
Music for February
Carrie Flint
Utilizing music in a physical education lesson is not a new concept. Physical educators that
already use music know that there are numerous benefits and research supports the pairing of music and movement. They go hand in hand.

Music can serve as a time management tool, it can be an instructional source, a motivator and
can help create an enjoyable and positive learning environment for their students.

I have always used music in my teaching. However, over the years my approach to lesson
planning has transformed as I have seen the positive impact that music can have on a lesson.  When I create a lesson,I not only select a song for it's beat and duration but also how it
matches the activity and theme of the lesson.  I select music as I am in the planning process,
not after. I know now how much music can enhance the learning environment and create opportunities for students to learn. MORE

Never too young for yoga: A different twist on PE for students
Staten Island Advance
Third grade students at Staten Island, New York's P.S. 29 proved that no one is to young to reap the benefits of yoga. On a recent morning at the West Brighton school, more than 40 students enjoyed a half hour engaged in a yoga practice. P.S. 29 has been offering yoga classes at the school for about three years, according to a school administrator. There are classes three times per week for which about 200 students take part. MORE
Sport for all, play for life
Project Play
In August 2014, the most-discussed baseball player in the world was a child, Mo'ne Davis, who had just turned 13. She was the star pitcher of the Taney Dragons, and she and her team drew record television ratings for the Little League World Series. The public was fascinated with Davis' against-all-odds story: an African American girl from southwest Philadelphia, overwhelming the best hitters in her age group.

From the mound, Davis did more than remind us that girls can compete with boys-she drew attention to the barriers that kids from lower-income communities must overcome to play. She reminded us that healthy kids are active kids and that, as a nation, we must find a way to extend the benefits of playing sports to all, including the millions of children who grow up with limited access to regular physical activity. Body clock may determine who wins the game
Science World Report
New findings published in the journal Current Biology examine just how important adequate rest is when it comes to physical feats and winning. Researchers found that the performance of competition-level athletes varied over the course of the day by as much as 26 percent. Those who naturally preferred to sleep in typically performed better later in the day than the early birds. MORE
This is how much exercise experts really think you need
TIME
The problem with our exercise recommendations, argues a new analysis published in The BMJ, is that they're just set far too high to motivate the people who need them the most. That's the argument of Philipe de Souto Barreto, a researcher at University Hospital of Toulouse in France and author of the new paper. "Getting inactive people to do a little bit of physical activity, even if they don't meet the recommendations, might provide greater population health gains," he writes.  MORE

Why some schools have 'cupcake amnesty' and others have cupcake bans
ABC News
In some states, public health and school officials would like to ban cupcakes from schools entirely, along with all other sugar-laden goodies. Recently, the Iowa City School district proposed prohibiting all homemade treats from school celebrations, allowing only fruits, vegetables and packaged foods with pre-approved ingredients. Increasing food-safety education could reduce food-borne illness in kids
