Flash Those Pearly Whites!
Teeth are alive! I never thought much about the liveliness of my teeth, but in the back of my mind I must have assumed they were solid masses once fully formed...like piano keys. But no, they have all kinds of life circulating through them. Like other parts of the body, teeth are constantly breaking down and replacing their cells. They regenerate, however, at a very slow pace. Of course, with proper nutrition generated from vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and with proper cleanliness, teeth can stay healthy. Here is the surprise...wait for it... damaged, decayed teeth can actually regenerate. Tooth decay is part of the natural cycle of cells dying and new ones forming. When all is in balance, our teeth are healthy and white.

The primary belief in dentistry has been that sugar and acids
on the teeth cause decay. It's a factor, but the primary cause is ingested sugars and processed foods in the diet that suppress the endocrine system. The key to tooth health is keeping the inner tooth core vitally supplied by the hormone-regulated dentinal lymph fluid system that transports nutrients and hauls away toxins.

There is a constant flow of fluid from the gut into the teeth. Nutrients are transported from the stomach through the bloodstream to the tooth pulp chamber where they supply the dentinal fluid with nourishment. This is an important conceptualization to grasp in order to understand the nature of tooth health and what you can do to promote a mouthful of healthy teeth. Healthy digestion, the premiere goal of Ayurveda, is what keeps teeth healthy, whole, and white.
Dentinal fluid provides nutrients and minerals to the teeth and flushes toxins out. The movement of the dentinal fluid goes from inside the tooth outward in a centrifugal fashion. When a tooth is compromised, even more fluid rushes to repair the tooth.
However, when the flow of dentinal fluid is interrupted or not strong enough because of poor digestion and toxins in the bloodstream, the movement inside the tooth reverses and becomes centripetal. Fluids are drawn from the mouth into the tooth. Bacteria, acids and fungi is drawn into the tooth. The pulp chamber becomes inflamed and oxidized. Slowly the enamel surface begins to de-mineralize and salivary enzymes start to break down the tooth and bacteria take hold to further decay. So yes, what is present in the mouth affects the teeth some, but only as a response to long-term unhealthy digestion leading to malnourished dentinal fluid. Poor digestion and malnourishment are the originating causes of tooth decay and Ayurveda always proposes solutions to correct problems at their source.

The key to a healthy flow of dentinal fluid in the proper direction is a nutrient-dense diet rich in minerals and vitamins -- basically a healthy Ayurveda diet. What you eat is very important because food goes to the stomach and nourished (or not nourished) blood is sent internally to the inner tooth which activates the dentinal fluid. The coherence of your teeth helps you to grind and break down food which improves digestion. Good digestion builds stronger teeth. It's a virtuous cycle.
Live with radiant intention and be well. Rhonda

Homemade No-Fluoride Toothpaste
Dry Powder Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp. organic baking soda (mild abrasive)
- 1 Tbsp. finely ground sea salt (mild antibacterial, whitener and good for the gums)
- Optional: 1/2 tsp. finely ground organic dried sage (sage is antimicrobial, but it has a strong taste) -or I use powdered organic neem.
Paste-
Add these items
- Optional: organic virgin coconut oil, softened but not liquified
- Optional: A few drops peppermint, spearmint, anise, clove or cinnamon bark essential oil, according to the taste you want (be sparing, they are very strong)
Directions
- Grind sea salt in a small coffee grinder, if needed, to make as powdery as possible otherwise it is abrasive.
- Mix all ingredients except the coconut oil to taste. You can stop at this stage and use this as a tooth powder if you wish.
- Mix in a teaspoon of coconut oil at a time until you find the right consistency for your paste.
- Put into a small, sealable jar or squeezable container and keep in a relatively cool place.
- Brush.
- Don't forget to floss!

Is Baking Soda Safe for Teeth?
We surely do not want to brush our teeth with something that is too abrasive. Mild abrasion is important, of course, to eliminate plaque and stains. Baking soda is such an old folk remedy for whiter teeth, but is it safe?
A scientific report compares the abrasion factor of a number of toothpastes plus baking soda. One of the tests conducted on toothpastes before its approval for public use is it RDA value (radioactive dentin abrasion) The results shocked me. Here is a sample of the findings:

Baking soda is less abrasive than all 50 toothpastes tested. I was surprised to see the pastes for sensitive teeth and some natural toothpastes like Tom's with high RDA numbers. Baking soda also helps to keep the mouth alkaline. I always liked the clean feeling of brushing with baking soda, but was worried about the abrasion. These data put my mind at ease. Go for organic baking soda.

Heard of Oil Pulling?
People are buzzing about this. It is a simple process of swishing oil around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes and then sitting it out. Benefits include reducing plaque and bacteria, supports gum health and oral hygiene. Oil pulls fat-soluble toxins out of tissues. I recently was at a workshop with John Douillard in Chicago. What an intelligent, sincere, and healthy guy! Here is his wisdom on oil pulling: articlevideo
