We've received several photos of completed knife kits. Here are Bill Heidt's and Tom Buhl's completed knives and their stories:
Bill Heidt used rosewood for his Chef's Knife's handle. But, before he built the kit, he used the instructions for a very special project and saved a worthy kitchen tool:
"My wife Martha had a knife that she bought with money from her Grandmother before we were married 43 years ago. About 10 years ago the original wooden handle rotted and split and the knife was taken out of service. Because of Ron's kit instructions, I felt better qualified to take on the project and Martha is very happy to see her knife again with its new rosewood handle."
FYI: Bill bought stainless steel dowels from McMaster Carr and finished the wood with 2 coats of Permalac aerosol, then rubbed the handle with a white Scotchbrite pad after the second coat.
Tom Buhl bought his kits directly after Woodworking in America 2013, but in time for Thanksgiving 2013. "Nothing like a deadline to get the old bones moving. The knife handles are bubinga. The knife holder is 'genuine' Mahogany. I was just trying to make something that could hold the knives, then shaped it a bit. Guess it does remind us of a wooden plane body. I could claim that was a plan...or not."
It is uncanny how Tom's knife holder resembles a wooden handplane!
Please keep those pics coming. If I could I'd have wrapping paper made up with them...well, ideas are a dime a dozen, aren't they?--
