HOCK TOOLS PHOTO ALBUM: Bill Heidt and Tom Buhl's Completed Knife Kits

We've received several photos of completed knife kits. Here are Bill Heidt's and Tom Buhl's completed knives and their stories:

Bill Heidt's Chef knife. Bill Heidt used rosewood for his Chef's Knife's handle. But, before he built the kit, he used the instructions for a very special project and saved a worthy kitchen tool:

Bill Heidt saved this knife handle. "My wife Martha had a knife that she bought with money from her Grandmother before we were married 43 years ago. About 10 years ago the original wooden handle rotted and split and the knife was taken out of service. Because of Ron's kit instructions, I felt better qualified to take on the project and Martha is very happy to see her knife again with its new rosewood handle."

FYI:   Bill bought stainless steel dowels from McMaster Carr and finished the wood with 2 coats of Permalac aerosol, then rubbed the handle with a white Scotchbrite pad after the second coat.

Tom Buhl's Chef and Paring knives.Tom Buhl bought his kits directly after Woodworking in America 2013, but in time for Thanksgiving 2013. "Nothing like a deadline to get the old bones moving. The knife handles are bubinga. The knife holder is 'genuine' Mahogany. I was just trying to make something that could hold the knives, then shaped it a bit. Guess it does remind us of a wooden plane body. I could claim that was a plan...or not."

Tom Buhl's knives and holder.

It is uncanny how Tom's knife holder resembles a wooden handplane!

Please keep those pics coming. If I could I'd have wrapping paper made up with them...well, ideas are a dime a dozen, aren't they?--

It's been a busy Winter at Hock Tools! So much so that we didn't get a February newsletter done. Linda's made up for it with this issue, though, as she and Scott Meek have been working together on a Guest Contribution from him. Scott tells what got him started making planes, how he kept going, and exactly what the pay off is for this amazing artisan of wood bodied hand planes. I'm extremely proud to partner with Scott, who pours quality into his work and raises the bar with each plane.

We've also shared Bill Heidt and Tom Buhl's finished knife kits with you. As an old knife maker, it makes my heart glad to be part of woodworker's kitchens. These two made beautiful knives, and a bit more.

Keep your photos coming and, of course, please let me know if you need anything from Hock Tools.

Sincerely,

About a year ago, a strange thing happened. I was at a Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event in Raleigh, NC showing off some of my wood body planes. The one and only Roy Underhill was also there, with his spring pole lathe. As is proper with the world, Roy had a rather large crowd around him and he was as entertaining as ever. I'd caught myself entranced by his showmanship many times as well. Suddenly, as I'm watching Roy work, a gentleman turns and looks at me, his eyes go wide, and he walks over to my bench and says, "You're Scott Meek! I've admired your planes for awhile now. It is so exciting to meet you!"
