How Flat is Flat Enough?
Let's take you back to Ron's book, The Perfect Edge; The Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers, for a few tips on fettling a plane, especially when there's a bump in the sole...

A Pitted Sole, Page 118, The Perfect EdgeThe pits in this neglected plane's sole will take a lot longer to lap out and have little or no effect on the plane's performance...

In the Q&A column of this issue Morgan Reed brought up a pretty typical problem that isn't always easy to analyze. Bumps on a plane's sole are not the first thing woodworkers think of when their plane misbehaves. Stuck shavings, chatter, and other problems are vexing to handplane users.

Any of these easily solved problems can be a big turn off and sideline useful older metal handplanes.

Our 1st Retirement & a Changing of the Guard in Shipping
Julie Burns
Julie Burns, left, has
been the Hock Tools shipping department for 12 years. Tomorrow she's off on a three week road trip to Oregon with her husband Michael during which they'll help their youngest grandchild Rowan celebrate his 3rd birthday, visit good friends, and not give a thought of coming back to work after their right good time.

Julie is the first ever actual retiree from Hock Tools. We adore her and hope you join us in wishing Julie the best.

So...on to the new at Hock Tools!
Mark Taylor Mark Taylor, right, is taking over the shipping department and is packaging and labeling as this is being written. Please help us welcome Mark.

And now? Onward!

Greetings!

Our Q&A issues have proven to be quite popular! This one focuses on Morgan Reed and his recently acquired antique yet bench worthy Stanley #8. He and I worked through some flattening issues typical of all plane soles but that require certain measures with metal ones.

You'll also find some excerpted tips in our Advancing Handtools column that address the basics about cap irons, frogs, and plane soles from my book, The Perfect Edge; The Ultimate Guide to Sharpening for Woodworkers.

Also, a milestone for Hock Tools: our first official retirement! Julie Burns, who has been running our shipping department for 12 years, has decided to spend time with her grandchildren, quilting (she is considered one of the coast's master quilters!) and her husband, woodworker Michael Burns. These are the reasons to leave a life of packaging and shipping for Hock Tools? Go figure!

We'll miss Julie for every possible reason. She is a lovely person; wise and good humored and doesn't leave until that last blade is wrapped, labeled, and set for delivery. Linda says Julie has civilized us, which is probably true. I feel fortunate for everything Julie has brought to Hock Tools.

Mark Taylor is stepping in with all sorts of background and enthusiasm. He's been training and learning the details of keeping inventory straight, packing and shipping blades and kits and the other things we sell here at Hock Tools. Please help me welcome Mark to our company.

And, of course, let me know if there is anything you need from Hock Tools.

Sincerely,

QandA
Q & A:  Help with Flattening a Stanley #8.

Morgan Reed's Stanley #8, Looking Down the Bore
Looking Down the Bore of The Big Dog, a Stanley #8

Here at Sharp & to The Point we toggle our
Q&A Issues
between Ron, who answers metal related questions, and Isaac Fisher, who answers woodworker related questions.

Today's question comes from Morgan Reed who purchased a Hock Tools blade and cap iron for his Stanley #8, aka The Big Dog.

Yet, even though Morgan was happy with his blade, things just didn't go smoothly. Ron offered useful advice.
