From The Executive Director

Holli Emore
Executive Director

Last Veterans Day some of you may have seen that our own Carol Kirk (Lark) was the speaker at a ceremony held at the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington, DC.  Only recently has a video recording of her speech been posted online. This morning I was moved to tears as I watched Lark tell her painful, beautiful story.

A whole generation of us were left dazed and blinking by that awful unresolved conflict.  Most of us had no idea what was really going on, and almost no one understood why.  The term "ptsd" for post-traumatic stress disorder had not yet entered the common parlance, and soldiers were expected to return home and pick up their lives.  As we all know now, a great many were never able to heal.  The wars in the Middle East have at last made us aware and concerned for the "wounded warriors" among us.

Lark is working on her thesis for a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling & Chaplaincy at CHS.  Retired from a military nursing career, and after long years of service to her spiritual communities, she is now taking up the many-colored threads of her life to make something of beauty to share with the world.  Her thesis will explore ways to guide veterans to a place of healing and, ultimately, back to full integration with home, family, work and spirituality.  To do this, Lark has faced her own past, braving the audience in November to reveal her life's pain and confusion.

This is the true work of a seminary, the real nature of education.  Anyone can read a book.  But the CHS experience really is the proverbial journey of spirit, leading, guiding, at times tumbling us along the way of self-discovery, awareness of others, and growth into a new kind of maturity.  This is the preparation for fuller living, for deeper service, that Cherry Hill Seminary offers.

We hear the word "hero" tossed around these days about anyone who puts on a uniform.  But, to me, the Larks of the world are the true heroes, the ones who face their dark nights of the soul and emerge in the morning with a song for the world.

Carol Kirk (Lark)
As we shared in November, CHS student Carol Kirk (Lark) spoke at the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington, DC on Veterans Day. Carol served as an Army nurse in a MASH unit in Vietnam from May 1969 to December 1970, and she cites her service as "one of the reasons that led me to Wicca."

Carol's powerful account of her experience is now available online on the Vietnam Women's Memorial website. Cherry Hill seminary again thanks Carol Kirk for her past and present service.

On February 4, CHS Executive Director Holli Emore attended a reception - as a Pagan representative - hosted by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and First Gentleman Michael Haley at the South Carolina Governor's Mansion. The reception was held (a little late due to weather-related closings!) to mark the occasion of the Governor's January 3 Proclamation of January 2014 as South Carolina Interfaith Harmony Month.

In her blog, Holli shares:  "Some say they dislike 'politics' and therefore stay away from the State House, rallies, and gatherings such as Tuesday's reception. But as I walked to my car through the gardens, past a large fountain, and under towering oaks, I thought, yes, this is my mansion, too, our mansion.

Research Resources from the CHS Librarian

Christine Grewcock
CHS Librarian

Many states have subscription databases that are available at no cost to citizens. Your local public library often has subscription databases in addition to those provided by the state. Public universities also have subscription databases available to the public. You can find out about these resources in our own Cherry Hill Seminary Library "classrom" in Moodle.

After you login on Moodle, you will see CHS Library at the top of the list. Click that link, then click CHS Library on the next page. At the top you will see "Research Resources at a Library Near You," which is a wiki. Click the link and pick a state to go to the page listing resources in that state. Since this is a wiki, it is collaborative, so you can add information. Please email librarian (at) cherryhillseminary (dot) org if your state is missing and you would like me to add it or you have any questions.
