Living Under the Shadow of the Lynching Tree
House of Bishops issues statement on political extremism

The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops concluded its spring retreat yesterday, and at the close of its meeting, the bishops present--more than 130 from across the church--unanimously approved a statement condemning the current climate of political extremism in the United States. Bishop Jeff commends the statement to all the people of the diocese:

On Good Friday the ruling political forces of the day tortured and executed an innocent man. They sacrificed the weak and the blameless to protect their own status and power. On the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, revealing not only their injustice but also unmasking the lie that might makes right.

In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season's political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. They seek to secure their own safety and security at the expense of others. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us.

Critical Cultural Competency Training
April 23 at Grace Church in Hinsdale

Over the course of the last 18 months, many of us have become even more aware of the urgent need to address the systemic and institutional racism that exists not only in our society but the church as well.  All of us are called to live ever more deeply into our baptismal vow to "strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being."  One of the ways we do this is by participating in the trainings and workshops offered by our Diocesan Antiracism Commission and partner organization Chicago ROAR

A Critical Cultural Competency training is being held on Saturday, April 23 from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm at Grace Church in Hinsdale. The online registration form includes more details about the training.
