LEDs continue to energize the lighting industry through performance, color and energy innovations. This month ALG Online News brings you highlights from LIGHTFAIR International 2013 with a focus on what's new in LEDs in Industry Trends. In our Featured Application section, we present two best practice lighting concepts for grocery stores with tips on how to properly incorporate LEDs into a new space or retrofit LEDs into an existing scheme. As always, check out What's New for relevant lighting news and events.

 Highlights from Lightfair 2013
ALG Online was at Lightfair International last week in Philadelphia to see firsthand the latest industry trends and cutting-edge design. It's no surprise that LEDs took center stage yet again as a driving force behind the latest design and performance innovations. From the world's smallest LED lamp to LED light sheets by Cooledge Lighting (which took home the Design Excellence Award and is pictured above) improved performance and integrated design reigned supreme. While energy savings and lifecycle are still distinct advantages of LEDs, it was advances in color rendering (with warmer color capabilities), distribution and integrated controls that had folks buzzing. The winner of Most Innovative Product of the Year was BoldPlay, an LED luminaire from Philips delivering both performance and maximum energy savings in a palette of natural color temperatures. We've talked about the growing trend in personalized lighting before, but this year's Judges' Citation Award winner, Hue personal wireless lighting, was a truly impressive web-enabled LED system from Philips. A residential package allowing app controllability of LED replacement lamps, Hue provides the first vertically integrated system for the general public, thought to be a game changer for market transformation efforts. How Green is Your Grocer?
As LEDs continue to improve in performance and cost less, they become increasingly viable as a replacement technology for certain luminaire and application types. This is particularly true in retail applications, which generally aim to meet the needs of both proprietors (efficiency) and customers (performance). In the case of grocery stores, LEDs are particularly viable upgrades for existing lighting schemes. Since LED replacement lamps are now compatible with many existing luminaires, retrofits are easier than ever. However, there is much to consider before simply swapping out a lamp or luminaire. You can read more here for tips on the right way to upgrade with LEDs.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Energy released an exploratory CALiPER study in which 24 pairs of troffers were compared in a simulated office space. The troffers, 21 of which were LED products, were evaluated on a variety of characteristics including photometric distribution, flicker, color and power quality among others. Key findings from the study indicate that: 1) although lighting quality may be a concern with LED products, it is "no more so than with the linear fluorescent fixtures they're intended to replace, 2) LED- dedicated troffers can...beat fluorescents in terms of efficacy, and 3) LED replacement tubes and non-tube retrofit kits are as efficacious as their fluorescent counterparts, though there are concerns about color consistency, glare, dimming, flicker, installation issues and code approval."
This month's featured advanced retail lighting design modules present strategies and design schemes for the Bakery/Deli (PDF) and Pharmacy (PDF) sections within grocery stores. The recessed troffers in Bakery/Deli (Type C) and Pharmacy (Type A) are primed for potential LED upgrades as discussed in the CALiPER report referenced above.
