Changing Your Stories Into Jewels

The stories you tell can be funny, destructive, affirming, and everything in between.

You tell stories to entertain, to establish your identity, to teach lessons, to make sense of a difficult situation, to convince, to fill a lull in the conversation, to get attention, to brag, and to hear yourself talk. Very few people tell mean stories intentionally; rather, they are unconscious of the effects of what they do, or so self-involved they don't notice.

Our personal stories are, essentially, internal dialogue, repeated over and over.

Stories used to be enlightening reminders of how to live. In modern culture, children's stories come closest to the old intentions, offering imaginative, zany, wise advice.

Our cultural and national stories often represent collective belief, or what those in power want us to believe: who the "enemy" is, why we need to destroy certain tribes, peoples, or nations; how the "reality" justifies our actions. Such stories carry the power of ideology.

Defining "Reality" with Stories

It's common in Western culture to think about "why" you feel a certain way; we often tell stories pointing blame. As we repeat these stories over and over, we are giving them more energy by re-visualizing and re-creating the wrong done to us. Energetically, we are creating density and heaviness by feeding the negative. Once the story defines our reality, we are more likely to expect the story to continue; we are more likely to step into another, parallel situation.

As we recreate the feelings we had with story, those feelings "become" reality for us. Our feelings may become reality for the others in the story too: the family "black sheep" lives as expected; the "terrorist" keeps acting like one. We see this in our personal lives, families, communities, and nations.

Culturally it is easier-whether we are an individual or a President-to get attention when we have a crisis or problem. The world is addicted to bad news.

Because the stories we tell ourselves-our perceptions of experience-remain in our unconscious, they continue to influence how we perceive events in the here and now. So how do we change that? What stories are we going to tell? What intent will we feed?

Shifting Perception With Dream Story

Sleeping dreams often replay and recreate your experiences and perceptions, repeating your internal dialogue. One of my teachers, the healer Mandaza from Zimbabwe, had advised me to keep asking for "clear sleeping dreams and visions, messages that do not need interpretation." Shortly afterwards, my dreams themselves began to shift my perceptions by showing me my old stories, then transforming them.

In my dream I am on a group trip. Scenes that remind me of many old failures pass before my eyes: the cute guy goes for someone else. I am slow to get the picture. I bog down in my "luggage" of stones and books. I am not a leader, not one of the "important" ones. I don't shine the way I could.  I find the people boring, disconnected, and disappointing.

The trip ends; people disperse. Then the group members begin to return, connecting with each other and having fun. I join them at long tables. Suddenly it is an animated, engaged time. I watch the jewels in all these ordinary (and formerly "boring") people come out. I am amazed.

This dream was a gift, changing "boring" people into "jewels" and showing me I could experience life differently. It drew on the more hopeful and appreciative framework I inhabit now, helping me to release my old perceptions.

The same process is possible as you "dream a new dream" for yourself, your family, and our world.

I'd love to have you share your dream gifts, the transformative dreams that have guided you into different perception, story and awareness!

Blessings on your dreams,
Meg Beeler/Earth Caretakers
