Energetic Compost: Letting Go What No Longer Serves You

"Worry causes heavy energy. Avoid it,"  Q'ero paqo Humberto Soncco tells us.

All the heaviness and density in out bodies, hearts, and minds-headaches, despair, defensiveness, fear, resentments, and so on-can be viewed as energetic compost. Like the physical compost from kitchen waste, our energetic compost can feed the earth, metaphorically.

In the practice of working with energetic compost, there is no positive or negative energy, only heavy energy and more refined, or lighter energy. Our intent is to move the heavy or disordered energy out of our field and into the earth, which loves to receive. Think of your energy as part of the constant flow of living energy.

The beauty of moving energy is that we don't have to identify or name what we are releasing: it is just energy! It's like tossing a banana peel: we no longer need it, so we put it in the compost. Similarly, we can release our heavy energy without rejecting it or clinging to it. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, "If we don't practice mindfulness, there is no way to transform garbage back into a flower."

Try doing this practice one time an hour, quickly. This pattern-of releasing and filling in reciprocity-is central to learning to move our energy.

Imagine an opening from your belly, just below your belly button, with a channel feeding into the earth. Think of the channel as an energetic stomach.

Intend to let the heaviness flow out from you, through this channel. Intend to feed the earth with your wonderful compost, joyfully letting go of what does not serve you.

Don't worry about naming the heaviness, or identifying it: simply intend, and intend some more, until the moment when you feel a shift: it's gone!

Then draw up lighter energy from the rich, nurturing earth, filling your cells. In this way, exchanging energy with the earth, you can explore the alchemical process of moving and shifting your own energy.

Imagine the soil, the earthworms, the water and pebbles, the seeds unfurling as you send down and draw up from the earth. In making these connections, you will be drawn out of your small self into a larger awareness, a greater integration with the world around you.

"Eating" the Heavy Energy of Others

"Eating" and offering the heavy energy of other people and situations back to the earth is a wonderful practice that comes from the Peruvian Andes. It's essentially the same practice as Energetic Compost (above), applied to the heaviness-drama, terror, trauma, anger, tension-outside of us. Instead of releasing our own heaviness, we are channeling any heaviness outside back into the earth.

When others are emoting heaviness, we can just gift it back to the earth. This moves the energy away from the human field, releases it like compost, and makes our own hearts more available for compassionate witnessing.

Intent is key. As we learn to monitor our energy fields, we get better at noticing what is not ours, but is muddying the field. In an office meeting, for example, my body tension may be an internal reaction to a person or statement, and/or it may mirror the general tension in the room. If I am able to step back, feed the tension to the earth, and continue letting it pass through my "energetic stomach," the energy in my body and in the room will change.

In this practice, it is important to be aware of what you are "eating," and not take in too much. If you experience a big sadness in your community, for example, release as much as you can to the earth, but don't exhaust yourself. Come back to working on the heaviness energetically when you can, offering the heaviness and calling in the lighter energy of love, or of the heavens, or of the surrounding elements.

Many people worry about giving heavy energy to the earth when they first learn about this practice. I remind them, and you, that it is just energy: the earth does not distinguish between coffee grounds, banana peels, and sadness. (Toxins and pesticides are a different story, since they affect many living beings.) Energy flows constantly. Whether it is heavy or light from a human perspective; it is really just energy.

Imagine this: you are at the site of a disaster. Terror, sadness, and trauma are everywhere. If one person (you) uses this practice, the field right around you will feel a little better. If 100 people, or 1,000, use this practice, how much more space might there be for everyone to take a deep breath, have a moment of spaciousness?

Visualize an energetic channel, just beyond your belly, leading into the earth. Gather and send the heaviness around you down this channel into the earth. Draw up lighter energy from the rich, nurturing earth, filling your cells frequently. Keep gathering, feeding, and filling. Continue this exchange of releasing and filling until the air clears or you cannot maintain your focus.

Discreation Visualization

This is a fun and easy way to release the energy of a belief that no longer serves us, that we no longer want. Analysis may work, but often gets us stuck in our mental constructs. Discreating the belief often works better. You'll notice that you need intent: if you are ambivalent about letting the belief go, you may be popping the bubble forever!

Children like releasing their fears this way. (They are usually better than adults at naming the feeling behind the belief.)

Choose a belief you want to discreate. Feel it, experience it in your body. Give the feeling a name.

See the name inside a bubble. Watch the bubble float up, up into the sky and away from you. Watch it go as far as you are able into the sky. When you can barely see it, pop the bubble with a pin. You can say "this is not me, this is my creation" if you want.

Repeat: watch the bubble float away. Pop the bubble when you can barely see it. Repeat again and again until you can't feel the belief inside you anymore. You will feel the shift in your body as the thought loses its energy and power.

Celebrate the spaciousness in your body!

Repeat over and over until the thought loses its energy and power. You will feel the shift in your body.
