Inspiration and Determination!

Jeremy and Connor just completed their 5K.

It was the tenacity and sheer determination that stood out on the wet, hazy day when Grandview Kids, families, friends and staff took to the streets of Toronto to walk, wheel and run for Our Kids.  Over 100 persons participated in the 5k walk/run, all to raise funds (and awareness) for Grandview.

These kids were not daunted by their own challenges as they bravely showed their "pumpkins" and inspired us all.

More than Words

The "More than Words" Workshop was critical to developing strategies that helped  Jermett and Ryan care for Carter and Madden, while they waited for services at Grandview.

"We learned ways to work with our boys that was meaningful. For example, we quickly found out that eye contact was key to effectively communicating with them. To get through, we needed to be face to face."

After hearing that their twin boys had a diagnosis of Autism, the Beattys tried immediately to get services at Grandview.

Carter and Madden were placed on a waiting list and waited one year for services the boys need.  They wanted to do something while they waited. The solution came with the "More than Words" workshop.

With the support of Intact, Grandview is able to provide therapeutic recreation programs to youth who would normally have been at risk in the community.

Grandview's Youth Camp Program is one of the few camp programs in Durham Region which serves adolescents up to 19 years old who have a broad range of special needs and diagnoses.

A chance to have what most take for granted

"As Deputy Chief of Police, I know how important Grandview's services are to the well-being of our community," said Deputy Chief Paul Martin. "We hope this campaign kick-off invigorates our community to get involved, and help a child in need."

Lance Brown and Deputy Chief of Police Paul Martin are concerned about the 1000 children wiating to access critical therapy services at Grandview.

Include Me - giving children a chance
Support the "Include Me" Campaign and give 250 Durham Region children a chance to walk and talk!

Grandview Kids help kick off the Campaign with Grandview friends, Motor City Car Club. Sharing the moment are Vicky Earle and Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann.

"Imagine not being able to communicate or to walk?" asks Vicky Earle, Executive Director of the Grandview Children's Foundation.

More than one thousand children with special needs and disabilities are being left behind in the Durham Region. These children are not receiving critical therapy services when they need them. This means that they are not reaching their potential.

The delay in receiving therapy services impacts the child's physical, educational and general development, and also puts added stress on their families.

"The current lack of funding for Grandview's important services puts additional strain on the other healthcare and social services, affecting the wider community," Earle concluded. "Every year demand for critical therapy services rise, waiting lists grow and children fall further behind. Let's help give these children a chance to have what most of us take for granted, the ability to walk and talk."

Have you seen this truck?

This Dufferin Concrete Ready Mix Truck is helping us spread the Grandview message. Community Partners have agreed to be a part of the Drum Mix Program by paying to put their logos on a working truck to help support Grandview Kids.

Some Grandview Kids were on hand to "christen" the launch with water balloons.

Sumayyah seemed especially excited to see the balloons hit their target.

And Jacob, well he got one big surprise... to try out the driver's seat in the Ready Mix Truck. Not even the truck was bigger than his smile.

Lions are roaring for Grandview Kids

The Lions Club of Courtice wanted to help our kids.  So much so, that they contributed to the Include Me Campaign.  Their support will help reduce the wait list for Grandview's services. Lion Jack also met some of Our Grandview Kids and here he shares a high five with Lauren while Huibert looks on.

Grandview Kids have turned into video stars.

Here Jonathon Picard Bourdeau

gets filmed green screen style.

That's right Grandview clients will star in ten 30- second clips to bring awareness to the great work being done at Grandview. Some are funny, some are tear-jerkers, but all are inspirational.
