Winter has finally come to an end and warmer weather has made its way through most parts of the country.  While we pull out the shorts and t-shirts in preparation for summer and get started on our Spring cleaning, there is a lot going on in the electricity industry.

Our latest newsletter looks at some of the exciting things happening to and in our sector.  2014 will be a big year with many great events.  The one we're most excited about is our 2014 HR Forum and Awards of Excellence, an opportunity to celebrate and share the best our industry has to offer.   We also look at the launch of newest occupational standard, the latest Citizenship and Immigration Canada Award recipient, and one of EHRC's new members, The Society of Energy Professionals.

Don't forget to check out our articles of interest below for topics like compensation and reward, working from home, employee development, networking, and mentorship.

2014 Forum and Awards of Excellence

October 24
th - Toronto, ON - St. Andrew Club

This will be a unique opportunity to learn about fresh and practical HR strategies from industry peers and subject matter experts. As we move to re-schedule our conference from Fall to Spring we have decided to hold a shorter event this year so the 2014 Forum is a half day national event. Attended by employers, labour, education, and government representatives working for and with the sector, the aim of this event is to connect, convene and inform the industry. It represents a unique opportunity to collaborate and learn with your peers.

Bruce Campbell, President and CEO of the IESO will open our morning. Plenary 1 will look at transitioning Canadian military members into electrical sector occupations while Plenary 2 will explore successful practices and how to inspire your multi-generational teams.  Combined with networking opportunities and our 2014 Awards of Excellence ceremony, you're sure to be left inspired.

National Occupational Standard - Industry Trainer

EHRC has developed a new National Occupational Standard (NOS) for the electricity industry.  This new standard outlines the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to competently perform the role of industry trainer.  Validated by industry, the standard can be used by all organizations - small, medium and large. In fact, the document is particularly useful for small- and medium-sized organizations that may not have established training departments as it can assist in the development of HR resources and tools to enhance the trainingfunction.

The NOS was made available to stakeholders on April 16th along with two companion documents, an essential skills profile and a user guide.  An essential skills profile (ESP) describes how workers in an occupation use each of the nine essential skills: reading, document use, writing, numeracy, oral communication, thinking, digital technology, working with others and continuous learning. The User Guide helps stakeholders think about how to incorporate the standard by illustrating 6 possible uses:

  • Developing a Train-the-Trainer program
  • Developing a job description for the industry trainer role
  • Developing a certification scheme for the industry trainer role
  • Conducting performance appraisals
  • Identifying professional development goals
  • Assessing industry trainer program curriculum

The funding for National Occupational Standard for Industry Trainers was paid for in part by the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities' (MTCU's) Sector Initiatives Fund (SIF).

Aboriginal Youth Camps for Summer 2014

With Summer quickly approaching, EHRC is looking to continue its Bright Futures Aboriginal Youth Camp programming.  With a focus on a variety of hands-on activities and lessons, these camps are designed to show that learning about Math and Science is more than just text books and that staying in school is important.   With introductions to various industry occupations and employers, our camps draw linkages between their interests and the electricity industry.

EHRC Member Profile

EHRC and our partners share a common vision; we believe a strong, competitive Canadian electricity economy is built on the strength of its people. Each issue of our newsletter will see one of these partners profiled.  The first member we will look at is The Society of Energy Professionals.

The Society of Energy Professionals is the union for 8,000 workers in Ontario's energy generation, transmission, distribution and regulation sectors. Working for 14 employers throughout all regions of the province, The Society's members include engineers, scientists, administrators, supervisors and accountants. Among the union's top priorities are promoting a strong energy sector that contributes to Ontario's economic prosperity, and protecting and advancing the rights of all working people.
