Greetings From the Birkie!

Dear Friends -

While the calendar says spring, mother nature has other ideas for the Wisconsin Northwoods, with 15+ inches of newly fallen snow on the ground as I write this! Chris and the groomers were back out, and the skiing will continue ... let 2015 Birkie training begin!

Click Here to see an updated grooming report.

I want to say thank you to all of you who completed the participant survey from Birkie 2014. We know there were many issues that surfaced that need to get worked on. The feedback and suggestions we received will be very helpful in working on solving some of the problems--thanks!

It was exciting to see so many folks sign up for the "Birkie Bonus" earlier this month, which bundled a full year of Birkie events to really live the lifestyle! Registrations for the Birkie Trail Run, the Birkie Tour, and the Fat Bike Birkie are now open on Birkie.com. Registration for the 2015 Birkie will open June 2.

As we close in on May, it will once again be time to re-up ABSF memberships. Members play a vital role in our success, electing our board, serving as great ambassadors, and supporting the foundation financially. We have a bunch of new membership perks we're putting together. Please consider joining in early May when we roll out the new program.

I hope to see you out on the trails as spring breaks and you don your running shoes or mountain bikes (or skis??). Until then, train on!

Lynn Dolan's Story

"My son was diagnosed at age 14 with Type I Diabetes.  He is now 22 and doing well as a premed student ... following in his parents footsteps.  Our initial support after this overwhelming diagnosis was Children's Hospital of WI who provided great Diabetes education.
We were looking for more so began reaching out to JDRF. Continued below ...

At right ... Lynn and Stephen: "This year was my husband's 9th Birkie and my 7th.  He beat me by 4 minutes this year, but I have the house PR at 3 hours, 44 minutes." -Lynn
Lynn won the Brikie's trip to Norway through Birkie Skiers for Cures by raising at least $250 for JDRF and being selected in a drawing.

"We did our first JDRF walk the fall after our son's diagnosis. When I made the right turn into the parking lot that morning at the Milwaukee Zoo I broke down and cried because the parking lot was full and there were dozens of tents and thousands of people. All those people were there to help support a cure for the disease that my son and many others have.  I had no idea so many people were involved. The Rickie Weeks JDRF outing and events at MCW that JDRF helps sponsor have been other highlights. Last fall I was lucky enough to get over to the Medical College of Wisconsin to hear Tom Brobson speak about current diabetes research.

"We have been lucky to have a child who manages his disease so well and we all have profited from the advances in diabetes care and the research that JDRF helps fund. As Birkie skiers we were thrilled that the Birkie has partnered with JDRF for fundraising. We love the Birkie so much we would consider retiring near there!"
JDRF is the Birkie Skiers for Cures Partner for Birkie 2013-2015.

 Birkie Fever!

A POEM ... BIRKIE 2014

The 2014 Birkie snow was new and slow ... The staring temp, why it was 2 below ... So I skied my heart out and made it through with all my fingers and all my toes ... The flats were hard and they seemed fast ... But it was the hills' deep snow that made it last ... It took extra time and I thought I had been fast ... But in the end I was out of gas.
