Greetings from the American Birkebeiner!

Dear Friends -
With the first snowfall having come, the excitement continues to grow for the upcoming ski season here in the northwoods! We recently installed a trail cam at "OO"--check it out on our website trail page at www.birkie.com/trail to see firsthand what the conditions look like 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
As funds are being sent out to Nordic clubs around the nation through our Skier Development grants, I'm reminded that skiing programs are getting started for many high school and youth programs. These programs foster the future of our sport and often depend on many volunteer hours to exist! Many need help with coaching, organizing, trail maintenance, fundraising, or just making a ski meet happen for the kids. Please consider helping out in your community today by contacting your local ski club, high school, or youth program.

As a reminder, if you find yourself in the area for Thanksgiving, remember it is Wisconsin deer hunting season Nov 23 - Dec 1. Much of the Birkie Trial is on county land that is open to hunting, so dress appropriately in blaze orange if you venture out during that period. Be safe!
Please don't hesitate to drop me a line if there is anything I can help you with. I can always be reached at ben.popp@birkie.com.

The First Ski Prep of the Season If you haven't yet, then the occasion will come soon when the travel wax (if you fulfilled your care duties to your skis last spring) will come off, when its time to set P-tex to groomed snowpack and commence another year, another winter of sliding on snow. Many will do this unceremoniously, but there are a few ski preparations that can help make the most of your time with your skis, help prolong their life and keep them speedy. Here's the Swix recommendation for your first ski of the year, whether your skis are recently new, recently stoneground or just coming out of summer storage ... Keep Reading.

Lighter Poles = Faster Birkie

Why should Birkie skiers care about their ski pole selection?
Ski Poles are often the post overlook piece of a Nordic skier's equipment. But ski poles are the only piece of your ski equipment that you actually hold, swing and lift the entire way. Racers average between 30-45 pole plants per minute. Over the course of the 52 km American Birkebeiner the winner may have lifted his poles more than 5,000 times. A skier completing the race in 3 hours could have poled 7,000 times and a 4hour skier might have lifted her poles 10,000 times.
But how much difference can a few oz. make?
Extra weight is not fun! If you and a friend ski a 3-hour Birkie and the friend uses their ... Keep Reading. |
