Greetings from the American Birkebeiner
NedZuelsdorff

Hi Skiers and Friends!

I do have mixed feelings as I write my final Carpe Skiem greeting to you. I have greatly enjoyed being here for the past eight years and working with a great team to bring you great events. It has been a lot of fun and I will likely, at times, miss being in the role I've had. But, I also look forward to working part-time on the Birkie Trail crew and helping to maintain and further improve this fantastic resource. I am also looking forward to having a little more time to do more running, biking, and skiing again.

It's been great for me and I congratulate Ben on his appointment and hope he finds the job as rewarding as I have.

Stay fit, and I will see you on the trails!

Ned

 "Birkie Fever"

Celebrating Cinco De Mayo on Snow!

Editor's Note: The weekend of May 3-5, 2013 was filled with stories of people who drove from near and far to ski the new, beautifully groomed snow on the Birkie Trail after 16+ inches of snowfall. The stories below are from Friday, but the fun continued all weekend! Here are just a couple of the write-ups that rolled in ... Enjoy!

"Skiing the Birkie Trail on May 3"
By John F. Olson

We were snowed in on top of Hungry Hill west of Washburn, WI, working at home.  Then the Birkie notice came over the wire.  We viewed Bill's video, looked at each other, and I said:  "Julie, this is nuts, we have to get down there!"  We managed to get out of the ... Continue Reading.

May 3

By Chad McGrath

The Birkie trail is a wonder.  Over 40 years of effort have gone into making it what it is today.  And today the Birkie trail was as it never has been before on this day.  Today, May 3rd, it felt the weight of 14+ inches of packed snow, it bore the bodies of hundreds of skiers gliding back and forth on a few kilometers of its otherwise absurd length ... Do you ever wonder how the Birkie gets pulled off year after year with great success? The staff, Board of Directors, a huge network of volunteers, and the communities of Hayward and Cable pour their hearts and souls into the events every year.

The ABSF was formed in 1984 when a group of local business people realized that strong support would ensure the race's future for years to come.  Members are the backbone of the organization because they alone elect the ABSF board.  You can show your support and take a bit of "ownership" in the race by becoming an ABSF member.  Individual memberships are $25 annually, $40 per family, and $50 per business.
