Greetings from the American Birkebeiner!
NedZuelsdorff

Hi Skiers and Friends!

Hard to believe, but people are still skiing here and other places. We're expecting up to six inches of new snow in the next few days! Our grooming has ended, but I and others have enjoyed skiing on ungroomed trails. Kind of getting back to the roots of cross-country skiing. Try it if you have the chance.

The Results issue of the Birch ScrollŽ is being mailed out this week, and you should have it shortly. We hope you enjoy it. Just a reminder that registration for the 2014 American Birkebeiner will begin on June 3 and will be entirely online.

Preparations are already being made for not only the Birkie, but our companion events, including the Birkie Paintball Biathlon on July 27 and the Birkie Trail Run & Trek on September 21. Information and registration are available at www.birkie.com. We expect more than 1,200 participants this fall. If you are a runner or walker, you should take a look at this growing and fun event.

We hope you have a great spring and always welcome your comments. You can send them to me at ned@birkie.com.

See you on the Trails and stay fit!

Ned

Thank You, Freewheel, for a Great First Event

Getting a new event, like the Fat Bike Birkie, off the ground takes a unique kind of energy. In this case, pulling off a great event involved having an enthusiastic sponsor behind us as well, helping us get the word out and attracting a great bunch of participants. We would like to again thank Freewheel Bike Shop, presenting sponsor of the first annual Fat Bike Birkie, for their early support in helping us bring this new Birkie event to life. Check out Freewheel online. Or if you're in the Minneapolis area, stop by one of their locations: The West Bank Store ... Midtown Bike Center ... Eden Prairie Store ... or even Freewheel Mobile, available Everywhere, MN.

 Birkie Fever

A First Birkie -- All the Way from South Carolina!

By Chuck Hooker

Editor's Note: You know the Birkie has participants from 48 states and 21 countries, so they can't all be from the snow belt. Here is just one story from a Southern skier ... who gets on roller skis a lot (a lot!) and gets on snow any time (and any place) he can. Congratulations on your first Birkie, Chuck!

It's the day after I completed my first full length "Birkie." ... The first Birkie 40 years ago had 35 starters; this year's race capped out at 10,000!  Which leads you to ask why a Charlestonian would be XC skiing 32+ miles, but that's another story... Keep Reading

Do you ever wonder how the Birkie gets pulled off year after year with great success? The staff, Board of Directors, a huge network of volunteers, and the communities of Hayward and Cable pour their hearts and souls into the events every year.

The ABSF was formed in 1984 when a group of local business people realized that strong support would ensure the race's future for years to come.  Members are the backbone of the organization because they alone elect the ABSF board.  You can show your support and take a bit of "ownership" in the race by becoming an ABSF member.  Individual memberships are $25 annually, $40 per family, and $50 per business.
