What It Means to Have
BIRKIE FEVER® In our house, winter is a journey whose destination is the BIRKIE! For almost thirty years, it has been a blessing in my life! THANK YOU. You guys run a world class event. It is the most fun you can have while torturing yourself. To me the day is close to a religious experience ... you are excited but respectful, almost reverent to the course and the challenges of the day. The people you are skiing with are all comrades on a mission to soak up the day and dig within to see what we all have down deep. Better than Christmas. I will be skiing the Birkie every year I'm alive on Earth. It's that special." THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who make this race possible!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the volunteers!Love skiing with over 9,000 of my closest friends. BIG THANK YOU to the Birkie staff and volunteers and the citizens of Hayward and Cable for making this wonderful event possible and a BIG THANK YOU to the fans for making the experience of skiing up Main Street second to none. Thank you for giving us all something to focus on all winter long! Birkie day is the gretest day of the year in my mind, ranking above Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Packer Sundays, Badger Saturdays, opening day of fishing season and even ahead of opening day of gun deer season. Birkie day is the ultimate Wisconsin experience. A million thank you's to all the outstanding volunteers is not enough. They are the reason the race continues. This was my first Birkie and it was AWESOME!!! I will definitely be back next year and many years to come ... I want my purple bib!! GREAT JOB everyone. Really impressive series of events for three whole days. The Birkie was an epic race! I hope I can be back next year with more experience, more training, and better technique. I really enjoyed my first Korte. Thanks to all the volunteers and event staff! This was my first endurance race of any kind, and I had a blast! Everything was great. Thanks for the memories!! Fantastic event - Great people - great organization and lots of fun! THE VOLUNTEERS ROCK! Thanks for a wonderful family event! I'm hooked on the Birkie now. Many thanks!"

Hi Skiers and Friends!
Wow, more than 1,100 of you have already registered for the 2013 American Birkebeiner in the past four days since we opened registration. What a start! We are already working hard on preparing for what will be a fantastic 40th anniversary of this great event.
I am really excited about our new partnership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to raise funds to find a cure for and help manage Type 1 diabetes that strikes so many young people. (See announcement, below.) I know several active young people, ages six to 30 who face the daily challenge of managing diabetes though diet, exercise, and insulin injection.
I am personally touched by the disease after being diagnosed in 1973 at the age of 22. I was a runner at that time and the disease lead me to trying cross-country skiing that winter. Thanks to encouragement from members of the Wausau (WI) Nordic Ski Club, I bought a pair of Toppen Turlett wooden skis and began the journey that led me to the Birkie event, and ultimately my present job. I am really looking forward to our three-year partnership with JDRF and hope that you are able to get involved to help us stop diabetes.
The Results issue of the Birch Scroll was mailed out this week and you should have it shortly. We hope you enjoy it.
We are also gearing up for the Birkie Trail Run, Relay and Trek on September 24. Information and registration is available at www.birkie.com. We expect more than 1,000 participants this Fall. If you are a runner or walker, you should take a look at this growing and fun event.
We hope you have a great Spring and always welcome your comments. You can send them to me at ned@birkie.com.
See you on the Trails and stay fit!

American Birkebeiner Announces Partnership with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
The American Birkebeiner is proud to announce a new charitable partnership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) through its Birkie Skiers for Cures program. JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing type 1 diabetes. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to diabetes research. The Birkie looks forward to its three-year partnership with JDRF and having the opportunity to raise funds for such a worthy cause during this time. Editor's Note: Although we posted this story on our Birkie.com website on February 8, 2012 it never made it into a Carpe Skiem, so here it is. Enjoy!
Send your Birkie Fever stories, any time, to media@birkie.com. During the Birkie of 2009, tragedy struck. My grandma, Judi Karshna, fell as she was snowplowing down a treacherous hill an d broke her arm, about halfway through the Birkie. We waited to yell, "Go Gunnar!" (our team cheer for each other) as she came up Main Street but, she never came in. We were all extremely worried, as any family member would be if their 68 year-old wife, mother, and grandmother went MIA during an American Birkebeiner ... Continue Reading.

Meet Our Board of Directors
Our ABSF Board Members are a diverse group of professionals who each has a deep connection to and experience with the Birkie. See their stories. What they do behind the scenes contributes to your Birkie experience. Click Here to get to know the Birkie Board. __________________________________________________________ Become a Member
Do you ever wonder how the Birkie gets pulled off year after year with great success? The staff, Board of Directors, a huge network of volunteers, and the communities of Hayward and Cable pour their hearts and souls into the events every year.
The ABSF was formed in 1984 when a group of local business people realized that strong support would ensure the race's future for years to come. Members are the backbone of the organization because they alone elect the ABSF board. You can show your support and take a bit of "ownership" in the race by becoming an ABSF member. Individual memberships are $25 annually, $40 per family, and $50 per business. Click Here to learn more. __________________________________________________________
Board Member Elections - Applications Due July 6, 2012 Every year several Board Members' terms expire. Candidates interested in running for the Board of Directors must submit a completed Candidate Profile. In addition, all non-incumbent candidates must submit a Nomination Endorsement form that contains a minimum of ten signatures from current ABSF members. All application materials are due in the ABSF office no later than Friday, July 6, 2012 and are available here (scroll to the bottom of the page.)
