Meeting the Needs of Young Families Experiencing Homelessness: A Guide for Service Providers and Program Administrators

RedGirlFamily1Funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Strengthening At Risk and Homeless Young Mothers and Children Initiative was established to integrate service systems in four communities and improve the health and well-being of at-risk families. Meeting the Needs of Young Families Experiencing Homelessness: A Guide for Service Providers and Program Administrators lays out a developmental model for programs working with homeless families, as well as strategies for those addressing the needs of young homeless mothers age 18-25 and their children. Results of the Initiative, coupled with knowledge of child development, trauma, risk and protective factors, and best practices, form the basis of this Guide. Read the Guide

Webinar Today! Involving Consumers and Adapting Policies

Join The National Center from 2:30-4 PM ET today, Thursday, November 29, for a free webinar on Involving Consumers and Adapting Policies. Organizational policies and procedures directly impact consumer choice, control, and empowerment. Policies and procedures that do not consider trauma and its impact can be re-traumatizing for consumers. In this session, participants will learn how to adapt current policy language and practice to ensure a trauma-informed approach. NASW CEU credits are available for 1.5 hours. Register now!

Program Spotlight: START with Kids

START with Kids (Shelter-Based, Trauma-Informed Assessment, Referral, and Treatment) is providing trauma-informed, clinically driven care to children and families in the emergency shelter system in Worcester, MA. It is part of the Safe Start Initiative, a federal effort to prevent and reduce the impact of family and community violence on children and their families funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention at the U.S. Department of Justice. Program components include: a comprehensive child assessment and corresponding service plan for use in shelter settings; a multi-family group intervention being implemented in shelters; and training and support to integrate trauma-informed principles and practices. START with Kids is a partnership between The National Center, Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance, and Dr. Laurel Kiser at the University of Maryland's Family-Informed Trauma Treatment Center.
