Stories of Success. Hope For the Future.
TCC's Open Horizons (OH) Scholarship Program is celebrating the high school graduation of three OH teen parents!
A drop out prevention program that provides quality child care and support to teen parents in the Tempe Union High School District, the OH program makes it possible for young mothers like Destiny Saavedra, Brittany Rojas and Crystal Eylicio to complete their schooling. These three young ladies received their diploma on May 20th from Compadre High School.
OH recipient, Destiny Saavedra, delivered Compadre's commencement address and was featured on Channel 12 news! http://ht.ly/1POes
She will be attending Gateway Community College and plans to study respiratory therapy. She attended the ACE program at South Mountain Community College while in high school; earning 24 college credits before graduating from Compadre an entire semester early. She served on the student council and was the student representative for the Compadre Advisory Board. She won a Tempe Dollars for Scholars scholarship for $1,000 and a Compadre Advisory Board scholarship for $600. She got pregnant at 14 and had her daughter Isabella at 15. Isabella is now a thriving 2.5 year old.
Brittany Rojas has a 3 month old son and plans to study nursing at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. She is the recipient of a $3,0000 Tempe IDA scholarship and a $1,000 Norton-Ramsey Compadre Advisory Board Scholarship.
Crystal Eylicio dropped out of school a couple of years ago after she had her daughter. She enrolled in Compadre this year and used the Open Horizons scholarship to finish her high school credits and complete the Pharmacy Technician Program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. She plans to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification test and begin working at CVS Pharmacy.
The Open Horizon Scholarship program is made possible by generous support from the City of Tempe, Tempe Diablos Charities, Valley of the Sun United Way and individual donors like you. Learn more about the program and how you can help.
