ASU Student Earns Academic Credit

Under expert supervision and working as a team member ASU student Jillian Stahl will earn University academic credit as a member of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)/Asset Development Initiative volunteer team from January through May. Ms. Stahl will promote opportunities at the Tempe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Supersite which helps low to moderate income families become financially stable. The Tax Assistance Supersite is located at Tempe Schools Credit Union, 2800 S. Mill Avenue in Tempe and will be open most Saturdays beginning January 30 through April 10 from 9:00 am to Noon. The site will also be open Wednesdays from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm during February.

The EITC/Asset Development Initiative is one of the ways Tempe Community Council (TCC) fulfills its mission, "connecting those in need with those who care". The Initiative is a partnership between TCC, City of Tempe, Newtown Community Development Corporation, Tempe Schools Credit Union and the Internal Revenue Service.

The Initiative integrates proven strategies to help people become financially stable. Along with free tax preparation and help with claiming the EITC, clients are provided with asset screening and access to asset development products at the Tempe Supersite including: food boxes, US Series I Savings Bonds, public benefits testing for food stamps and healthcare, and matched savings accounts (IDA's) for homeownership, education, affordable housing and no-fee savings accounts. Participants have the opportunity to attend financial education workshops and public awareness activities.

Following training, Ms. Stahl will serve as an Asset Educator who will help individual taxpayers learn how to use their tax refunds to access resources in an effort to meet both current and future needs. The Asset Educator will compile and analyze data from asset surveys completed by taxpayers. Initially these surveys determine the need for, and interest in, asset opportunities that may help individuals become more financially stable.

In 2009 Tempe's EITC Initiative filed 887 tax returns, totaling $1,281,733 in tax returns back to our hard working neighbors!

Congratulations & thank you
