6 Babies

Since Angels was founded in 1999, we have rescued 407 babies from abuse and neglect.

So far this year we have rescued
46 babies.

Hello Angels friends.

Angels is celebrating the graduation of their summer class of new parents with 11 new families about to receive their certifications. Once certified, they will soon be called by their Angels social worker with information about a foster baby who needs a home.   This is a very exciting time for all our new parents as they begin their Angels Journey.  It is often a time of fear, uncertainty, trauma and grief for the child who has been removed from the custody and care of his parents and becomes another senseless victim of abuse.  Over the next few weeks, the Angels social workers will be busy matching babies to the 11 newly certified families.

We are also celebrating our wonderful agency on Oct. 20 at our Angels annual luncheon, highlighting The Power of One!  You will meet many Angels families and children and see up close and personal the power one family can have in the life of a child!  Our stories are touching and offer hope and promise to every baby served.   We expect a sell-out crowd so go online now and purchase your ticket early - this is not an event you will want to miss!

Happy end of Summer to All, and a big Fall Welcome!

Warmest regards,

Cathy Richman

Here is the August Dr. Mama question:

Dear Dr. Mama,

Our little Angel just had his first birthday, and he's been with us since he was 6 months. I've recently been concerned about his rapid weight gain. He's always been on the big-for-his-age side and has an appetite that just won't quit.  At his 1-year check up last week he weighed 28.5 lbs, which puts him above the 95th percentile. He's tall too ... about the 80th percentile, but with all we're learning about childhood obesity and the health problems that come from it I'm worried we're on the wrong track.

This baby will eat pretty much anything we put in front of him. I try to offer healthy foods without a lot of sugar and fat, but it seems like he's always hungry. At most meals he polishes off way more food than our 4-year-old, and then goes on to drink a full bottle. We're giving him whole milk because the doctor said that after switching from formula he needs the extra fat until he's 2. It sure doesn't seem like it.

It also doesn't help that when he goes for visits with his bio mom, she seems to stuff him with his favorites non-stop. Last time we picked him up she told us he now loves jelly donuts!

What can we do to slow down his weight gain and get things moving in a healthier direction?

Fall Training Classes Starting Soon!

We need more loving families to help the littlest foster children in San Diego County. If you know of a family that would be well suited to join the Angels team, please forward this newsletter to them and encourage them to find out about our program. We have orientation the first Wednesday of each month and a Fall Training Class that we are hoping to fill with 15 qualified families. If you or someone you know is interested have them call Annika at 619-283-8100 ext. 221 to find out the details about orientation.

Foster Parent Spotlight- Michael and Tracy

Micheal and TracyOur family came to Angels Foster Family Network after a long desire to provide either a temporary or permanent home to a foster child within the United States. We have fostered one child thus far "Matthew" whom we brought home from the hospital when he was 27 hrs old. Matthew has been in our home for the past 15 months and captured our hearts the moment we laid eyes on him as a newborn at the hospital. He was a beautiful baby lying in a clear plastic crib with no one but the nurses caring for him. Click here to read more.

A New Sister Angels- Oklahoma City, OK

Congratulations to our new "sister Angels" in Oklahoma City.  Founder, Jennifer Abney and her husband adopted beautiful little Desi after being her Angels foster parents, here in San Diego. With a 10 year history of infertility, imagine their surprise when a month after fostering Desi they learned they were pregnant!  Kate was born and Desi was adopted and the family of 4 moved to Oklahoma City.  Jennifer decided that there were many wonderful families in Oklahoma City who would also make great Angels parents, and so she has successfully launched Angels of Oklahoma, modeled after our program.  We congratulate them on launching the agency, and are joyful for all the foster babies in Oklahoma who find their way into an Angels family!

Heels to Heal

Heels2Heal held a beautiful fundraising event on Friday, August 27 to benefit Angels! Their fashion show and cocktail event was beautifully put on and Angels was so glad to be a part of it. Heels2Heal was formed in 2009 to raise awareness and funds to benefit local charities that are making a difference in the lives of neglected and underprivileged children in our community.
