Dear Angels Friends,

Angels just moved into our new wonderful office and as I watched the movers bring in box after box, I had to stop for a moment and reflect on where did all this "stuff" come from?  Our first Angels office was a very small room we rented for $160 a month.I brought in a borrowed desk, computer and lamp from home and we splurged by painting the room and adding new carpet!  I sat for months writing the Angels Program Statement and waiting for the phone to ring!  We have come a long ways in the past 11 years, as reflected by those boxes. While it started with a simple idea, Angels has grown to the amazing agency we are today because of all our families, staff, board and donors.

We are approaching the placement of our 400th child - a number that reflects amazing commitment and hard work by everyone who believes in our cause!  Our babies are growing up and it is with the purest joy that we observe the amazing children they all are!  Please mark October 20th on your calendars so you can attend our annual luncheon, and come and experience the joys our children and families have given us all in the past 11 years.  You can find the save the date here, as well as take a look at our newly redesigned Web site, angelsfoster.org.

We thank you all for staying in touch monthly through our newsletter.

Warmly,

Cathy Richman

Please read Dr. Mama's question:

Dear Dr. Mama,

We have a 10-month-old Angels baby who has been with us since he was a month old. He's a happy, smiley little guy who enjoys everybody and everything - except when he has a cold.

We've been through a few of them now, but this latest (and it isn't completely gone yet) is really a whopper. Cough, congestion, and a runny nose that just won't stop. We took him in to see his pediatrician, who says we just have to ride it out.

I know he's too young for any of the cold medicines, but what can I do about the endless flow of mucous from his nose? Sometimes it's clear, but sometimes it's yellowish-green. He's at the age where he fights and screams if I try to come at him with a tissue, and the crying just makes more mucous. Forget the nasal aspirator (I read a past issue of Dr. Mama where you mentioned that) - he's not having it.

When we're at the market or the park the other moms look at us like "why don't you wipe that child's nose?"  I'm really mortified and feel like I'm falling down on the job.

Is there anything I can do about the snot?

Foster Parent Spotlight - The Doelman Family
Doelman Family

"Our family felt called to become an Angels family.  It was in 1999 when we first learned about Angels Foster Family Network.   We had friends who fostered through Angels.  We thought it fascinating, as they would show up to the baseball fields with new infants that had joined their family.  My husband and I thought that we would like to do this someday."

Ranch and Coast Magazine Article on Angels

Angels Article Image
In the May issue of Ranch and Coast magazine, Angels and an Angels foster family was featured.

Cathy Richman noticed a disturbing trend during her five years as a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) in San Diego's foster care system.

"Too many kids were not getting the attention they needed," says Richman, who advocated for 17 children as a CASA volunteer.
