Unity Week at Boulder High

Dear Community,

Last Tuesday, on October 3, Out Boulder took part in Unity Week at Boulder High School. A Speaking Out Panel, including Gwen, Ilene, Lauren, Bonnie, and Andy shared stories of coming out and being part of the LGBTQ community with 200+ kids. Students asked questions after the panel and throughout the assembly were very welcoming. This is just one example of our Speaking Out program, that sends trained volunteers to 60+ schools per year. I am so honored to be part of an organization that can reach out, educate, and open the eyes of so many youth. In past evaluations, kids have commented:

"I think it is great that we can openly talk about these issues and that people can share their experiences. It really helps create a better understanding."

"The authenticity of the presentations has made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin."

What was the most meaningful thing you heard today? "Just seeing others like me. I feel less alone."

Want to be part of Speaking Out? Our next training is Saturday, November 3

In Solidarity,

Jen Spolnik

Program & Marketing Manager

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  Rev. Dr. Mel White To Give Talk in Boulder

For many of us, coming to find peace with our spiritual lives and our sexual identity has been a long and difficult road. Soulforce, founded by Rev. Dr. Mel White, was one of the first organizations to actively work to heal the fractures between the faith and LGBTQ Communities. And, through "relentless nonviolent resistance to bring freedom to lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender, and queer people from religious & political oppression."

Rev Mel White Out Boulder is proud to be co-sponsoring an exciting event from First Congregational Church of Boulder, United Church of Christ. On Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., they are bringing Rev. Dr. Mel White, Author, Activist, and creator of Soulforce to speak and celebrate their 25th Anniversary of being an "Open & Affirming" Covenant! (GBLTQ Welcoming). Lee Ellis, Actor, Singer-Song Writer, Composer will perform his song "Stranger At The Gate" written and performed for Mel White at the first Soulforce gathering in 1999. Also join us on  Sunday, October 21, 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. where Mel will deliver the sermon at both morning worship services; and/ or for the Luncheon & Workshop where we'll learn to do what Mel does to fight the religious right and their attempts to deny LGBTQ rights.

For Lunch & Workshop, contact Nate Morrison at morrna@gmail.com and put "Luncheon" in the subject line. ($10 donation suggested at the door for lunch.)
