Comic Book Making Project for BOLD Youth

BLAM!!   WHAP!!   KABLOOEY!!!

My job as the BOLD Program coordinator is so much fun! This coming week I will get to use all these fun onomatopoeiae (whoa! there's a word I haven't used since middle school!) to work on our first ever queer youth comic-book making project! This project has been a buzzword in the back of my head for about two years, and now it's happening! Now, my drawing skills range from a stick-figure person to a stick-

figure cat! Needless to say, comic-ing is not my strong point! Good thing we have some amazingly talented and excited youth to lead our summer programs. Jake the Incredible will lead this project! This project is free and is going to be June 23, 24, and 30th and is open to LGBTQ and Allied Youth 13-18, no experience is necessary, and folks can choose to draw, write, or both. It's going to be a great way to kick off BOLD's summer programming. For more info, check the Out Boulder Calendar, or contact me, B the Brave!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:
Volunteer Sonya Smith

Sonya Volunteer Out Boulder
"Shortly after I moved to boulder this winter, I noticed the Out Boulder bumper stickers in all manner of random places. Volunteering lets me pro-actively support the work being done to strengthen our community in Boulder." ~ Sonya Smith

Sonya has been an all-star volunteer as an office assistant for Out Boulder. She is professional and dependable and we love having her smiling face here on Thursday mornings! Sonya moved to Boulder from San Francisco at the New Year to go back to school.  She is studying at Frequent Flyer's Production to get their aerial dance teaching certificate. In September she will be starting the MFA in Dance at CU.  She spent the last 10 years dancing and teaching Pilates in San Francisco. She has done a lot of work with 848 Community Space/CounterPULSE--an organization and performance space with a strong commitment to preserving space for queer performance in San Francisco. In 2005 Sonya coordinated the construction of their new space....working with the architect, construction company, and scads of volunteers to create a theater and offices in an empty building. In this role, she fully experienced the need for volunteers and the challenge of utilizing them!

We are so lucky to have Sonya as part of our team!

LGBT Uganda Book Drive for Sexual Minorities - June 20 - August 1

Donate books on LGBT subjects, and make a difference in the lives of people in Uganda!

Uganda is one of the most difficult countries for LGBT people, lagging behind the rest of the world in cultural acceptance of

differences in sexual orientation and gender identity. The government has been imposing oppressive and inhumane laws that discriminate against Uganda's LGBT citizens, often putting them in grave danger. A sobering reminder to LGBT people worldwide, the Infamous "Kill The Gays" bill is, incredibly, still being debated in Uganda's parliament.

In the face of immense challenges, Sexual Minorities Uganda Group (SMUG) has been bravely fighting for the rights of Uganda's LGBT population.  Through advocacy and lobbying work, coordinating the efforts of diverse organizations, education programs and much much more, SMUG is making a difference and you too can help, all the way from Boulder County.

Please join us in a book drive to populate SMUG's library by donating your used books on LGBT subjects.  Drop off books at the PrideHouse during working hours,
or on the back porch, or at Dave Ensign's home at 4020 Evans Drive (box on front porch).  Your books can go
from gathering dust to making a huge difference in the lives of Ugandans on the front lines of the battle for acceptance. More info
