Night of Noise Youth Dance - April 19

night of noise gay youth lesbian glbt boulder

Dear Community,

This week marks the National Day of Silence. On this day thousands of students choose to go the entire day in silence to send a powerful message about anti-LGBTQ bullying in schools. To commemorate this important action, and to celebrate the power of youth, Out Boulder is participating in the Day of Silence by throwing our second annual Night of Noise Dance. This fierce youth-planned event will be held Thursday, April 19 from 7-1030 at the Boulder Loft Teen Club. It is FREE and open to all LGBTQ and Allied Youth 13-20. Two youth DJ's will be spinning jams, the award-winning Beat Junkies dance team will be performing, and glow sticks and skittles will be abundant! If you are a youth, please join us for this special event!

This past weekend, I went to see the film Bully with some friends and could not help but think about this important day. While watching this film, I thought about the amazing LGBTQ youth Out Boulder works with through our BOLD OffBeat Arts youth program, which I have had the honor of directing for almost four years. I thought about their struggles and their power, as well as my own. The film reminded me, once again, how important youth are to our community, how intelligent, sensitive, and brave they are, and that supporting them both in communities and in schools is vital not only for them, but for us older folks as well. I was a queer youth, now I work with queer youth. I learn from them everyday. The youth that worked on planning this event have put so much time and energy into it, and I am so excited to celebrate the powerful youth of Boulder County with them. Thank you Leah, Ali, Reina, Garrett, Nick, Caito, Ann, and Trevor for putting together such a great event for this significant day. BREAK THE SILENCE, MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!

In Solidarity,

B. Mann, BOLD Youth Program Coordinator

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  Allies in Action Award Recipient Clela Rorex

Out Boulder, Boulder County's community center for lesbian gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies, is pleased to announce the inauguration of the Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award. The Award is named for Clela Rorex who, as Boulder's city clerk in 1975, issued the world's first leclelagally administered marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  At the time of her foresighted and courageous action, Ms. Rorex received widespread publicity and criticism, but she never wavered from her stance that she was willing to risk her job in the service of fairness.

After 37 years, if anything, that stance has been strengthened. Reflecting on her impact in the history of Boulder's LGBT community and her support today, Ms. Rorex says that she "grew into the role of being an ally." Read More...

La Mission - April 23

La Mission Benjamin BrattPlease join us as part of the Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration to watch the movie La Mission, followed by a discussion at the Lafayette Library.

Growing up in the Mission district of San Francisco, Che Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) has always had to be tough to survive. He's a powerful man respected throughout the Mission barrio for his masculinity and his strength, as well as for his hobby building beautiful low-rider cars. A reformed inmate and recovering alcoholic, Che has worked hard to redeem his life and do right by his pride and joy: his only son, Jes, whom he has raised on his own after the death of his wife. Che's path to redemption is tested, however, when he discovers Jes is gay. To survive his neighborhood, Che has always lived with his fists. To survive as a complete man, he'll have to embrace a side of himself he's never shown. More info.

Community Day of Silence: Celebracion Die Del Silencio - April 20

Each year lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth across the country are silent for a day to honor and bring attention to those who have been silenced through violence and institutional oppression. As part of Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration, we are asking the entire community to stand with our youth.

ChavezAs participants we ask you to print cards describing your reason for doing this activity and post a sign in their place of business if that is appropriate.

We are asking you to sign up here if you are going to participate in the Community Day of Silence. We will email you after the CDOS to get your experiences and thoughts as you participated. Cards and fliers can be found here.
