Highlight of the Week - You'll DEFINITELY Want to Meet Chely Wright!

A couple months ago, I wrote a top ten list of the things I love about Out Boulder for our weekly Enews. One thing I failed to mention as something I love is that Out Boulder ALWAYS has something going on. You can always find a social meet-up, film, or support group offered by us or one of our community partners. And this newsletter is the way to find it all out (in addition to our website, facebook, and twitter!). At times the many things going on in Boulder County for the LGBT community can be overwhelming -- but I can't complain about that!

The highlight of this week is the screening of "Wish Me Away" AND even better, a reception that follows featuring Out country star Chely Wright in the flesh! As a cultural partner of the screening, Out Boulder is teaming with the Starz Denver Film Festival to offer this special combo including the movie and reception with free drinks and food. The VIP tickets can be purchased through Out Boulder at Brown Bag tickets and the catch is that there are only 14 tickets left! So buy your tickets NOW for $20 and meet Country star and author of the book "Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer," Chely Wright. The event will take place on November 4 @ Highlands Church, 3241 Lowell Blvd in Denver at 7:30 p.m.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Manhattan Middle School

This week, the community spotlight turns into a FLOOD LIGHTS and they are all aimed at Manhattan Middle School, the amazing young people that attend the school, and the absolutely revolutionary, loving faculty and staff that make Manhattan a place of equality, respect, and well being for all that enter the school.
Manhattan Middle School held an assembly for their entire student body this past Friday with the intention to educate and empower each and every one of the students to create a culture of love and support, one of true camaraderie. Where curiosity about the things that make us different is valued over picking on, or making fun of those differences.
Approximately 450 people gathered in the Phoenix auditorium and actively engaged  with a variety of messages highlighting the impact that words and phrases like "That's so gay" and "That's so retarded" as well as the richness in being of different cultural and ethnic heritage.
We were treated to a wonderful concert by the school's own choir and by the acclaimed Denver Gay Men's Chorus too!  Immediately following, students returned to their classrooms to craft the strategy to stamp out bullying in their school.
As Kathleen Sepeda, member of Out Boulder's board of directors put it, "something beautiful happened at Manhattan Middle School this past Friday, and it is inevitable to feel excitement for all the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.   It takes only one very courageous school to set the tone"  Manhattan Middle School has stepped up to that challenge and takes the lead in the effort to create truly safe and embracing Boulder Valley Schools.

Manhattan Middle School Phoenix, shine bright and continue to R.I.S.E!

When she was at the top of her game as a country singer-songwriter, Chely Wright risked alienating thousands of her adoring fans and even some of her family members by coming out as a lesbian. The decision came after nearly 20 years of tortured introspection and daily prayers to God to "make it go away." Wish Me Away is a wrenching chronicle of Wright's personal countdown to the day in 2010 when she resolved to go public.

Director-producers Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf zoom in on Wright as she wrestles with her decision and its implications for her career, built on sexy videos like "Single White Female"-and, of course, on the concealment of her own sexuality. Her father, sister, and Nashville colleagues also speak candidly in interviews, voicing their love and support yet fearing the repercussions of her announcement. Poignant therapeutic sessions with her minister underscore her inner struggle along with her strength and courage.

Wright's reasons for coming out were, she claims, threefold: to free herself from the burdens of living a lie, to lend support to gay children and teenagers, and to counter the belief-especially in the type of Bible Belt community in which she was brought up-that homosexuality is wrong. On May 4, 2010, Wright released both her memoir of life as a closeted lesbian, Like Me, and her first album of new songs since 2005, Lifted Off the Ground. One of the tracks on the album shares its title with this intimate documentary (which won the jury prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival earlier this year).

Revolutions and Out Boulder are proud to announce "Break the Mold": a unique personal growth, artistic, and social opportunity for LGBTIQ adults

Break the MoldOut Boulder and Revolutions present: "Break the Mold" as part of our Health and Wellness program! Daily requirements of the mechanized world cut us off  from the nourishment that exists naturally within us. Out of touch with our bodies, we become out of touch with others, our work, and the world around us. Even partially disconnected, we can turn to empty or unhealthy forms of pleasure for fulfillment and wind up feeling worse. LGBTIQ people must continually cope with the additional stressors of homophobia/transphobia and internalized oppression.

This 7-week group offers a welcoming space to access untapped strengths and creativity through original movement. Participants will explore body-based patterns that are life-limiting and play with new options. It's perfect for those wishing to shake things up in a healthy, powerful way. "Break the Mold" promotes increased embodiment and conscious choice in an environment of respect, curiosity, and fun. If you suspect there is more of you to know and to share with the world, please join us in this exciting group, created especially for Colorado's LGBTIQ community!

Contact Leslie at 720-284-1197 or mccormick.leslie@gmail.com for more information and to pre-register. A limited number of scholarships are available through Out Boulder.

The workshop will take place on Wednesdays evenings, November 2nd -- December 21st, 5:45-7:00 p.m. at Boulder Circus Center, 4747 26th Street. The cost is $210.00 for 7 weeks (a couple of scholarships and sliding scale spots are available).

Bent Lens Presents Weekend - November 11

Weekend, Bent Lens, Out Boulder

Check out "Weekend"at the Boedecker Theater at The Dairy on Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Bent Lens Salon.

"Perfectly realised - a bracing, present tense exploration of sex, intimacy and love." -- A.O. Scott, The New York Times.

Director Andrew Haigh's second film explores an unconventional love story between two young men trying to make sense of their lives. Lingering on the initial sparks of an erotic and emotional connection, Weekend explores the intensity and import of a relationship's beginning. On a Friday night after hanging out with his straight mates, Russell (Tom Cullen) heads out to a nightclub, alone and on the prowl. He picks up Glenn (Chris New) just before closing. And so begins a weekend - in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex - that will resonate throughout their lives.

(Directed by Andrew Haigh, UK, 2011, 96 min, English). More info
