The City of Canton is holding a PUBLIC HEARING to obtain PUBLIC COMMENT regarding an appeal of the Planning and Zoning Board's denial of application to rezone the area near Sowell Road and Old Jackson/Nissan Parkway as a Planned Urban Development (PUD) with apartments.

The hearing is 6p.m., TUESDAY, August 17, Canton City Hall, 226 East Peace Street.

Also, this area was approved for Tax Increment Financing of $1M in Jan 2005 and contained language limiting the accepted uses of the TIF district and does not include residential or apartments http://tinyurl.com/3xu9gnn

In Nov 2009, the TIF was amended to triple the size to $3Million http://tinyurl.com/33n9scq . Most of the County and City ad valorem taxes City of Canton Sales Taxes will go toward Bond Debt Service payments for the next 20 years. Also, contains the same limitations on permitted usage. John Bell Crosby and D.I. Smith voted against this amended TIF increase of 300%

A 26 acre apartment complex will have a substantial impact on the Madison County School District and is located across I-55 from the new Germantown Middle School and the under construction Gluckstadt High School.
