As we mention at the end of every newsletter, we love hearing from you. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for improving our newsletter, feel free to contact us! Our goal at the Polish Pottery Mart is to serve you and learn your various interests, so that we create the best newsletter possible.

Leap Day
"Leap Day" is February 29, which is an extra (intercalary) day added during a "Leap Year, making the year 366 days long--and not 365 days, like a common year. Nearly every 4 years is a Leap Year in our modern "Gregorian Calendar."
Ever since Leap Years were first inltroduced over 2000 years ago with the transistion from the Roman Calendar to the Julian Calendar in 45 BCE (Before Common Era), Leap Day has been associated with age-old Leap Day traditions and folklore.
Women can propose to men! Now is your chance, ladies. According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St. Bridget struck a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men--and not just the other way around--every 4 years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.
Any Leap Day birthdays on our mailing list? For those of you who were born on February 29, you are all invited to join The Honor society of Leap Year Day Babies. Also, we would love to know who you are.
According to the Guineness Book of Records, there are record holders both of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29 and of the number of children born on February 29 in the same family.

Pączki Day

This year Pączki Day has come a little earlier! Pączki donuts are typically consumed in Poland on Fat Thursday (the Thursday before the start of Lent), which would be February 16th. However, Polish Americans generally consume these delicious treats on Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), which would be February 21st!
Not familiar with Pączki Day? Then feel free to visit our newsletter from March 2011, which reveals information about the pączki donut. Click here for March 2011 Newsletter
We also have a recipe for making pączki in that newsletter. We at the Polish Pottery Mart have not personally tested the recipe, but Jim and Diane often get their pączki donuts from Woodmoor Pastry Shop in Silver Spring. |

Polish Recipe of the Month:
Apple Compote
By: Peter and Laura Zeranski
Looking for an all natural, healthy dessert to serve to your loved one this Valentine's Day? Then try Peter and Laura's apple compote!
4 cups water 1 cup sugar ½ cup sugar, or less to taste 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon lemon zest 8 semi-sweet apples, peeled, cored, quartered (Gala or Fuji are great) 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Bring the water to a boil, add one cup of sugar and stir to dissolve; add the cinnamon and lemon zest; add the apples. Simmer for 10 minutes or until the apples are just soft. Stir in the lemon juice. Taste for sweetness. The syrup should be refreshing and not cloyingly sweet. You should clearly taste the cinnamon as well as a bit of lemon in the background. Add or don't add more sugar depending on your taste buds. Adjust the flavorings slowly, if needed. Simmer for 5 more minutes or until the apples are soft enough to cut with a dessert spoon, but not mushy. Chill thoroughly before serving.
Serves 8
