Moving Update:

As we had discussed in our very first issue, we are moving into a brand-new, larger space just a few steps away from our current space in the New Weave Building of Historic Savage Mill.

We had planned on being moved in by March 1st, but some of the remodeling has taken a little longer than expected.  We now plan to begin our moving process by the weekend of March 5th, so we will be sure to keep you updated on our progress.

New Items to Come & Items that Have Arrived:

Along with our new location will also come new items!

Note Cards:  We are pleased to present a new line of note cards created by Carla Hazard Tomaszewski of Poppyfield Press.  These note cards reveal beautiful images inspired by Polish history and culture.  From Polish sayings to sketches of Poland to even historical images, these note cards are truly a unique gift or even collectable.  Be sure to stop by and check out these unique note cards that are already available in our shop.  The image above is actually one of the many note cards we now carry at The Polish Pottery Mart.

Cookbook:  The Polish Pottery Mart will also be carrying a Polish cookbook by Peter and Laura Zeranski.  We are lucky enough to be a part of their cookbook with the front cover image revealing our large bowl with handles and square plate in pattern U29 filled with Peter and Laura's delicious Hunter's Stew.  We will let you know when this new cookbook arrives at our store.  But, to get more information on this cookbook and the authors, visit their blog: Click Here

And these two items are not the only new items you will see coming to The Polish Pottery Mart!  There will be even more new items to come when we move into our new space.  But, you will just have to wait and see what new additions we plan to bring to you.

The Celebration of Women's Day

Women's Day or Dzien Kobiet in Polish is celebrated every year on March 8th.  This holiday was created in 1948, and the celebration ranges from the expression of respect, appreciation, and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

Although this holiday was originally enforced by the Communist government, it soon became an accepted celebration, and a part of the Polish culture. Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it is still a celebrated holiday.

In Poland, this holiday is celebrated for all women, regardless of age.  Women typically receive special attention and gifts, such as flowers and candy.  Gifts are not only given by family members, but women also receive such gifts at work and even at school.

While Women's Day is very important to those in Poland, it is also celebrated internationally.  In the United States, it is best known as Women's Rights Day.  Such a day was almost forgotten in the United States until it was brought back into view in the 1960s due to the growing women's movement.

Paczki DonutAbout the  Pączki Donut

The  pączki is a rich jelly donut that originated in Poland.  These delicious donuts are traditionally consumed in Poland on what is know as Fat Thursday, or the Thursday before the start of Lent.  Many Polish Amerians typically consume pączki on Fat Tuesday, or the day before Ash Wednesday.

It has been explained that the pączki was created in order to rid individuals' homes of ingredients, such as lard, eggs, sugar, and fruit, since such food items were forbidden during the Catholic fasting practice of Lent.

Never had a  pączki donut or interested in making your own? Below is a recipe to make your very own batch of pączki donuts.

The Polish Recipe

of the Month:

Pączki Donuts

(This recipe has not
been tested by the staff at Polish Pottery Mart). We have purchased our Paczki doughnuts from Woodmoor Pastry Shop in Silver Spring - yummy.

STEP 1 - Making the sponge:

1 c. lukewarm milk

1 c. sifted flour

2 pkgs. dry yeast

1 tbsp. sugar

2 tbsp. warm water

Dissolve the yeast in warm water and add sugar. Add the yeast mixture to the milk and flour. Cover. Let rise until double in bulk.

STEP 2 - Making the dough:

5 eggs

1 c. confectioners' sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1/4 lb. soft butter

1 tsp. rum extract

1 tsp. orange rind

1 1/2 tbsp. salt

6 c. flour, sifted (or just enough to make a soft dough)

Take 5 eggs and add confectioners' sugar. Beat well until lemon colored. Combine with the sponge and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, rum and orange rind. Then add salt and butter and mix well.

Add sifted flour gradually to the above mixture and knead dough until it comes away from your hand. Cover, set aside in warm place and let rise until double.

Flour a board lightly. Divide the dough into 3 parts. Pat dough until 1/2 inch thick. Cut donuts with cutter or inverted glass. Let rise until double.

STEP 3 - Frying the pączki:

Heat the oil to 350°F, drop donuts into hot oil and fry on one side until golden and puffy, then turn on the other and continue to fry until other side is golden. Remove and place on paper towels to drain. Roll lightly in granulated sugar or glaze with icing.

Makes 2 dozen.

Pączki can be frozen up to 3 months. To serve, place in brown paper bag, sprinkle with water and place in warm oven until the donuts are hot - about 20 minutes.

The pączki can be filled with jelly; a pastry tube is used after the donuts are fried.
