Greetings!

We hope you had a great weekend.  Here is your weekly Small Business Advocacy Council update.
Happy Hour At Lincolnshire Gourmet

ER speechApproximately seventy folks packed the Lincolnshire Gourmet last Thursday for our SBAC Happy Hour.  The weather was great, spirits were high and many small business owners had an opportunity to meet for the first time.

castilloWe would like to thank the Lincolnshire Gourmet, an SBAC member, for being gracious hosts.  The atmosphere in their party room is outstanding and the appetizers were fantastic.  We hope to be back there for another event soon.

We will be having our next Happy Hour the last week in May.
Republican Candidate Forum - May 22nd

Our Republican candidate forum has been confirmed for May 22nd at our Northfield office.  We will begin at 12:15 p.m.

Robert Dold, 10th District Candidate for Congress, will be addressing the group for 30 minutes. Afterwards, we will be holding a panel discussion with the following Republican candidates:

-    Suzy Schmidt (31st District)
-    Lauren Turelli (58th District)
-    Dan Sugrue (59th District)

Feel free to submit written questions for these candidates in advance of the event.  Otherwise, we will have an opportunity to ask the candidates questions and voice our concerns during the forum.
SBAC Blog

The SBAC blog last week featured an article about the proposed value-added tax and a press release from the United States House of Representative's Small Business Committee about the unreasonable burden small business owners face when attempting to comply with our complex tax code.

This week, our blog will include:

-    A press release from the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship which highlights a recent hearing on the budget of the Small Business Administration. Landrieu Chairs Hearing on Small Business Administration budget

-    A very informative article on ways small business owners can obtain financing through a ROBS plan. We are not advocating for, or against, obtaining financing in this manner.  However, we feel the article is worth sharing. Finance Your Franchise With Retirement Funds
Advocacy

At our recent policy meeting, the SBAC members in attendance (over 25) supported drafting a petition that would:

-    Stress that the lending crises has caused extreme hardship for small businesses and that this situation must be urgently addressed.

-    Aggresssively move the government to make returned TARP money available to small business owners and demand that financial institutions that receive these funds make reasonable loans to small business.

The language for this petition will be drafted by the May 22nd candidate forum.  We will begin circulating the petition on-line and by visiting small businesses shortly thereafter.

Membership

Michael Cavanaugh, the co-chair of our membership committee, will be circulating a form to our members asking them to identify several prospects for the SBAC.  Please take the time to complete these forms.  They can be E-mailed to SBAC Vice President Blanca Campos at Blanca@smallbusinessadvocacycouncil.org or sent to our office.

Michael has secured a skybox for an upcoming White Sox game on Saturday, June 5, 2010.  We have five open slots for the game and they will be awarded to the members that provide us the most leads for the SBAC. Thank you Michael.

Our membership has swelled to 73 in approximately two months.  If you are receiving this newsletter and are not a member, please visit our website and consider joining.  For the cost of $25.00 a month, we believe this is an outstanding value.

It is our mission to do all in our power to help our members prosper.  Indeed, the stronger each member of the SBAC becomes, the more we can do to help each other and push forward the agenda of small business and hard-working Americans.
