News and Events:
August 2010
Greetings!

The summer is winding down and fall is around the corner.  With the recent confirmation of Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court, the new term is going to begin with three women justices as members of the high court bench for the first time in history.   Meanwhile, the NHWBA new fiscal year is beginning with a new board, a new strategic and tactical plan, and a lot of new member benefits.  Members matter.

Over the summer, the NHWBA Board held a strategic planning retreat.  Many of the recurring themes at the retreat were the growth, momentum, sustainability and visibility of the NHWBA as an organization.  The other recurring theme was our members and the benefits NHWBA provides to them.  Members matter.

This is your organization and we need to know what you would like to receive as member benefits.  For example, what type of educational programs would most interest you?  What types of networking events are you most likely to attend?  What is the one member benefit you would like to see the organization provide?  We already provide the least expensive CLE programs and networking events in the state and we plan to continue to do so, but we need your help!

As you know, we cannot provide programs or benefits to our members if we do not have a solid membership base.  So, we need your help growing our membership, moving forward, sustaining the organization for future members and becoming more visible in the unified bar association and in our State and local communities.  If you are interested in joining a committee or becoming involved in programming, networking, public relations, fundraising or member outreach, please let us know.  There are opportunities available for all of our members and we welcome any help you all can provide.

Our members matter.  They are the core of our organization. We would not exist without you.  In the recent economic downturn it has been difficult for many practitioners to maintain their memberships in voluntary organizations like ours.  We thank all of our members for sustaining this organization and we want you to know that if finances preclude you from maintaining your membership, we can work with you through any economic hardship you are dealing with.

As incoming president of this organization, I hope to meet all of you in the 2010-2012 term.  I hope to be able to continue the momentum generated by Kristin Mendoza and our past board.  My call to action to you this term is to get involved in our organization and make your membership matter even more.  See you in September!

Best regards,

Holly B. Haines

NHWBA Accepting Nominations for the
Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award

The New Hampshire Women's Bar Association is accepting nominations for the 2010 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award.

The Award named in honor of Marilla M. Ricker honors outstanding women lawyers in New Hampshire who have achieved professional excellence or paved the way to success for other women lawyers or advanced opportunities for women in the profession or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.

The Award is named for the woman who petitioned the New Hampshire Supreme Court for the right for women to practice law in New Hampshire.  In 1890, with all justices concurring, Marilla Ricker won the right women lawyers have today.  Setting the standard for equal rights for women in New Hampshire, Marilla Ricker paved the way for women lawyers and advanced their contribution to the legal profession.

In
this course, you will be able to identify your own personal communication style using the Boost methodology while learning how to maximize your strengths and remedy areas that need improvement.

Presented by Deb Tuttle of Key/Boost Training and Staffing and Mary Murphy of MassMutual Financial Group.
Member Spotlight - Katherine Brown

Congratulations to Katherine Brown, member and past president of NHWBA, on her election as Treasurer of the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations! Thanks to Katherine's work with the National Conference, she has brought back many ideas and programs to New Hampshire - including NHWBA's successful Food Drive to feed hungry children.

About two years ago, members of the ABA Health Law Section's Breast Cancer Task Force embarked on a project focusing on the stories of attorneys who had survived breast cancer. Sharing the stories of attorneys who have survived breast cancer provides an opportunity for reducing the sense of isolation and fear commonly experienced among our colleagues. And by developing this online resource of attorney survivor stories, the task force works to convey the message that there is no one "right" way to experience and manage this disease.

Click here to learn more, and meet the survivors, including NHWBA's own Jennifer Turco Beaudet!

  Hope Starts Here...

Since 1993, nearly 5 million walkers across the country have raised more than $340 million through Making Strides events to help fight breast cancer. Last year alone, dedicated supporters raised more than $60 million nationwide to help the American Cancer Society continue fighting breast cancer and offer hope to people facing the disease.

You too can help Make Strides Against Breast Cancer! Consider forming a team at your law firm for the walk this fall:

What:       The American Cancer Society
                 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

When:       Sunday October 17, 2010

Where:      Arms Park, Manchester, NH

Walk start: 1 p.m.

Walk length: 3 or 5 miles

This noncompetitive event unites people of all ages with a common goal to fight breast cancer and save lives. Chances are, you or someone you know have been affected by breast cancer in some way, and Making Strides gives you the power to fight back and make a difference.

Starting a team is easy and takes less than five minutes.  You can find more information by clicking here!
