Paws 4 You Rescue E-News
Welcome to Paws 4 You's E-Newsletter

We appreciate all our supporters, fans and followers.  It is truly a great feeling to have the backing from our community.  You keep us moving in the right direction and we are able to save more and more dogs from the pound.

Many of you ask what is it that our dogs need.  And as many of you know, not all of our dogs are lucky enough to be in foster care during their stay with our Rescue.  Those without foster homes are placed in kennels, where they are boarded in between being rescued and finding their forever home.  One of the faves is the KONG.  They are versatile, valuable, safe and long-lasting.  The fun never stops and we are confident that our dogs are happy and secure playing with the KONG.  If you would like to donate a KONG toy to one of our dogs, please drop off any size or color to us at an upcoming weekend adoption event.  Or click here to find them on our Amazon Wish List.

You will notice Nylabones on our Wish List as well.  These also come in many shapes and sizes.  Nylabone's products promote good canine dental hygiene, enhance overall mental fitness and encourages positive behavior.  Thank you in advance for wanting our dogs to have something to play with while they are staying at Paws 4 You Rescue.

Most of the kennels used for our dogs are large outdoor runs.  Although these runs provide a lot of space and comfort for our dogs day to day, our dogs are at risk during hurricane season.  With the first signs of storms brewing, we're asking for your help to ensure that in the case of a hurricane situation those dogs that are currently housed in outdoor facilities will have a safe place to weather out the storm.

We have a growing list of fosters for our Plan Hurri-K9 Foster Program but always looking for additional participants.  Plan Hurr-K9 is designed to place our dogs in foster homes during hurricanes that are not life threatening to humans.  For those storms that we are able to ride out in the safety of our homes.  Please click here to download a Plan Hurri-K9 Foster Agreement or email foster@paws4you.org for more details on how you can help in a time of emergency.

Thanks again for your friendship, kindness and generosity.  Be sure to check out our website, LIKE our Facebook Page and follow us on Twitter!  Lots of current and valuable information is shared every day.

In Lieu of Flowers

Ross and Olive

Ross Greco was a thoughtful dog-lover who, in the Fall of 2011, together with wife Melody, adopted Olive, a Jack Russell terrier mix. Shortly after learning his illness would prevent him from continuing his work at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Ross planned for his early retirement. Both he and Melody knew that Ross would need company to help fill the extra hours at home. Melody worked longer hours in her job as social worker at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office. Rescuing Olive meant saving a life, and bringing much needed joy to their lives at such a difficult time.

The Greco's applied online to Paws 4 You Rescue, and Olive, with her pretty green eyes and kind smile, was their top pick. Mel and Ross prepared their home and counted the days for her arrival, as if they were new parents all over again. From a photo and brief description Ross and Mel instantly attached to Olive, and envisioned the happiness she'd bring, and the new purpose and role Ross would take on -- dog trainer, nurturer and best friend to Olive. Of course, this also meant endless hours of walks and peaceful time by the coy pond. Ross taught Olive not to fuss with the coy and the two enjoyed their time outdoors in the garden of their home in Tampa, Florida. Olive and Ross became inseparable.

As the months progressed Olive stayed closer to her friend, leaving his side less and less as he became more limited due to progression of the cancer. When Ross entered the hospital she missed him and searched for him endlessly at home, sniffing his belongings as a reminder of Ross and anxiously awaiting their next reunion. When he returned home from the hospital she watched over him in his bed as if helping Mel provide an important part of his care -- unconditional love, devotion and the unthinkable acceptance that soon their beloved Ross would leave them.

On March 12, 2012, Ross passed peacefully in his home with his family by his side. Olive licked his face and gave kisses and was an important part of his final moments. She enriched the last months of Ross's life in the same way he and Mel enriched hers -- and then some as Mel shared with us. "Olive seems to know that I need her now. She's always by my side and looks at me as if communicating to me -- "I'm here for you mommy". I believe she's an angel sent from heaven - first to help Ross.....now to help me."

The Greco's gift of love to Olive and to rescue went far beyond one dog. At his passing, donations to Paws 4 You Rescue were requested in lieu of flowers. In the next several days the Greco's thoughtful and generous friends and family donated in Ross's memory. His gift to Olive and the Paw 4 You dogs at the retreat in Miami, is a forever reminder of his love for Olive and commitment to rescue.

Today Olive and Mel enjoy a special bond and both share the treasured memories of their time with Ross. Their routine consists of runs in the neighborhood, leisurely walks lots of love and on-going training, visits from neighbors and meditation at the coy pond.

Give Your Old Shoes a New Life

Did you know that over 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown in the trash each year? Old shoes that are discarded can spend more than 200 years in a landfill before decomposing, and shoes are in great demand in third world countries.

ShoeBox Recycling collects gently used shoes for reuse.  These shoes are "worn, but definitely not worn out".  This company works hard to give your shoes a new life.
And for every pound of shoes that Paws 4 You sends, ShoeBox Recycling donates 50 cents.

If you are a local Miami business that would like to help us raise money simply by allowing a ShoeBox Recycling box at your place, please email jen@paws4you.org.

The Rescue is working with a few local schools including Palmetto Elementary and Alexander Montessori. If you think your child's school would like to participate in this recycling and fundraising opportunity, please let us know.  The best part is that kids can put a note in their donated pair(s) and track where they go via the ShoeBox Recycling website.  With a simple note in the shoe, students can trace the path of their donation.

Please spread the word and take your shoes to a

Paws 4 You Rescue Mission Statement:

Paws 4 You Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer, donor-subsidized animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida.  Our top priority is to save animals from euthanasia at
Miami-Dade Animal Services. On average 100 animals are destroyed every day at this county shelter!

Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost. We give these animals a safe environment, professional medical care, pet meds, training, support, hope and lots of love. Our animals are sterilized, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped to prevent future loss. Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from respiratory illnesses and skin infections to cherry eyes and heartworm treatments.

Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts. Our dogs often stay at veterinary clinics or boarding facilities when foster homes are not available. In order to increase our animals' visibility, we spend time taking our new friends to different events across South Florida in search of their forever home. Our team is compassionate and passionate in reaching these goals. We are a group of professional people with various backgrounds, who together commit to saving as many animals as possible.

Additionally, we believe in the value of education pertaining to the importance of spaying and neutering.  Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in our county and by sterilizing your pet, you help relieve the strain on Miami-Dade Animal Services and our community.

Please support us. We depend on your expertise, time, temporary foster homes and donations to
reach our goal of saving these animals.
