Alliance Consulting International, explores lean manufacturing in the
second of a two-part article, originally published in the company's
Pulse Point newsletter. "The business case for sustainability is now accepted by most of the leading global enterprises. Leading companies with extensive supply and demand networks in sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, communications, pharmaceuticals, automotive, chemical, and aerospace have a great need for standardized metrics and indicators of sustainability performance that can be applied across the supply chain." Bloomberg: Wal-Mart Spurs Sustainable Toy Animals Into $1 Billion Market
"Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Wham-O Inc. and Warren Buffett's Garan Inc. are backing toys made from natural or recycled materials...While green toys account for less than 1 percent of the market, the number of products is growing, said Jim Silver, editor-in-chief of www.TimetoPlayMag.com.
"In any economic climate, the willingness to pay a premium to save the earth can be a tough sell," McGowan said."
GreenBiz.com: Getting Started with Greening Your Supply Chain
"The p rocess of optimizing your entire supply chain can be overwhelming in the best of cases. But taking on any of these ideas can prime the pump to get your company rolling toward greener operations. While making a contribution to the environmental movement is not only a personal and corporate imperative, the potential it holds for significantly improving efficiency and lowering costs within your organization's supply chain is compelling. For many companies, however, going green will require a cultural shift that fosters corporate-wide ownership and long-term commitment."
TIME: PepsiCo Tests Fertilizer to Cut Tropicana CO2 Emissions
"To make a greener orange juice, PepsiCo needed a greener fertilizer - and that's exactly what the company is experimenting with. Working with a pair of agricultural companies - Yara International and Colorado-based Outlook Resources - PepsiCo will test low-carbon fertilizers at one of its producer farms in Bradenton, Fla. If successful, the greener fertilizers could lower the carbon footprint of PepsiCo's citrus growers by as much as 50% and reduce the total carbon footprint of Tropicana orange juice by up to 20%."
Environmental Leader:The Challenge of Managing Your Sustainability Reputation
"I often hear managers saying, "We don't talk publicly about our sustainability and CSR initiatives. We do it because it's the right thing to do. For us, it's action, not words." A high minded posture, and not without strategic benefit. Some companies have found that sticking their heads up over the parapet and proclaiming their corporate virtue sets them up as a target for activist groups ready to pounce on any misstep. But as a recent CSR audit for a large national restaurant chain undertaken by the Thunderbird School of Global Business highlighted, this is a growing challenge for corporate sustainability executives."
Inc.:The Case, and the Plan, for the Virtual Company
How smart entrepreneurs are finding money and happiness in an office-free life
"We at Inc. have written a lot about companies that have experimented with new ways of working. We have been told by entrepreneurs, academics, and consultants that getting rid of the office and working remotely can make a company more productive, better for the planet, and cheaper to run. We have also heard that the idea of taking an organization like ours virtual is totally crazy."
