Role of EOH Professionals in Sustainability Initiatives
|
|
Environmental and occupational health professionals play an integral role in the advancement and integration of sustainability initiatives at organizations worldwide. Current
demand for sustainability efforts provides an opportunity for EHS
specialists to take on leadership roles and coordinate sustainability programs. This will be the focus of Mark Katchen's presentation at the 2010 EOH Technical Symposium on February 18 at California State University, Northridge.
EHS professionals have skill sets that can help organizations succeed in their
sustainable development efforts. The presentation explores sustainability within the context of the EHS
specialists' role and provides strategies for applying existing EHS expertise
to sustainability leadership opportunities. For more information about the symposium, please see our news release.

Building EHS Capacity Worldwide
|
|
International Training Program in Place The need to build global capacity through
education and training is an issue of vital importance in environmental health
and safety. Many major multinational corporations and firms in the developing
world are expanding into locations with limited inherent capability in the
protection of workplace health and safety. An international effort is now
underway to build EHS capacity through the establishment of training modules
focusing on the development of basic practical skills.
Companies such as BP have tried and tested basic modules on fundamental
principles, which have been run in many countries including Australia, China,
Indonesia, Singapore, Spain,
South Africa, the UK and Vietnam. The modules are written by specialists with
practical experience in the respective areas of occupational hygiene and are
subject to peer review and copyright approval to make them suitable for translation. Mark
Katchen, managing principal
of The Phylmar Group, through the American Industrial Hygiene Association, is
presenting a course on the "Measurements of Hazardous Substances" to be taught in Shanghai in June 2010. In an upcoming
issue of ISHN Magazine, he will explore the topic of building EHS capacity in
more depth.
