Dear ,

For a lot of people, memories of fathers and grandfathers in their lives often revolve around family times, vacations, car repairs or handyman projects around the home front.  For me, I was fortunate to have a dad and two granddads that were very fond of nature, out of doors leisure time like camping and fishing, gardening, landscape and lawn care.  So I suppose I can say that my green thumb is genetic from many different aspects.

As we celebrate the men in our lives who have lovingly nurtured and provided for us as fathers and grandfathers and in some cases, great grandfathers, regardless of whatever shade of green their thumbs may be - do consider sharing the botanical richness and architectural grandeur of the Conservatory of Flowers with them on their special Sunday in June.

Maybe even surprising them with a thoughtful gift of a Jungle Pass that would give them a year's long enjoyment of so many days of back-to-back 'grand openings' and horticultural 'wows' would be the perfect sign of appreciation?  Plus, we do have the best oxygen in San Francisco within our plant-filled conservatory galleries!!!

However you choose to make the most of your Father's Day, make the Conservatory of Flowers part of your plans GO GREEN the 'official color of Father's Day 2008"!

The Discovery Cart is Born!

The Discovery Cart
Discovery Cart Committee: Thea Vierling, Rosalie Bohner, Rich Casse and Cheryl Miller

Our very popular Jungle Tours for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students take place Tuesday - Thursday during the school year. But for young visitors on weekends and during the summer, we were missing a hands-on educational opportunity. A group of very dedicated Conservatory volunteers saw a need and worked diligently to create our first "Discovery Cart". The committee has spent the last six months meeting, assembling materials, and writing scripts to be used with the Discovery Cart materials.
The committee debuted their new learning sessions to enthusiastic focus groups and refined their presentation based on feedback from numerous children.
Five modules are currently available: Roots, Fruits and Seeds, Carnivorous Plants, Leaf Adaptations and Flowers. Each module lasts five minutes and covers very basic information, appropriate for young children, presented in an engaging, interactive style.
Our volunteers have attended training sessions for each of the modules and will soon be available in the Conservatory to share their knowledge with you.
Further enhancements to our Youth Education program and our Discovery Cart are in store, thanks to a very generous grant from the Mary A. Crocker Trust.

New Orchids for the Conservatory
Colin Sprang at the Conservatory
Mario Vega, Colin Sprang, Brent Dennis, Lupe Cota

We are very grateful for a donation of the K. Hart Smith Orchid Collection. Hart was the only son of George D. and Eleanor Hart Smith who owned and operated the Mark Hopkins Hotel and was well known as a generous patron of the arts. Hart passed away on January 9th leaving his treasured orchid collection to his dear friends, Ruth Quigley and Colin Sprang. Ruth and Colin decided that the majority of the plants needed to be in a public place where their beauty could be shared and their first thoughts were of the Conservatory of Flowers.
Our Nursery Specialists, Mario and Lupe, pictured above, along with Clare Cangiolosi and Eric Imperiala are nurturing the 50 lovely orchids in the greenhouses and will have them on display in the galleries when they are in bloom.
Thank you, Ruth and Colin, for your very generous donation to the Conservatory! We will treasure these beautiful plants.

Butterflies enjoying alyssumA variety of butterflies are enjoying the nectar from sweet alyssum. The big blue one towards the top is a Spicebush Swallowtail. The 2 orange beauties are Orange Julias and the black & white butterfly is a Zebra Longwing. A Luna moth has also joined the party - but it has no mouth and does not eat during its short lifespan.

Don't miss these delightful creatures appearing in the Special Exhibits Gallery through November 2nd.

Night Safaris to search for mysterious moths start at 8pm on the first and third Thursday of the month through October 2nd. For more information click here.
