Student of the Day!
| St. Anastasia Catholic School Student of the Day John Salerno
_________________________________________
Congratulations to third-grader John Salerno as he is Student of Day on Monday, May 17! John's mom, Tina, won the Student of the Day silent auction item at last year's Night for the Children Auction and Dinner Dance. With this honor, John will receive: a free dress day on Monday, two free homework passes, free lunch for a week and this article all about JOHN!
John is in Mrs. Russell's class and his favorite subject in school is recess. His best friend is Austin Evans. He said he is "kind of excited to go into 4th grade!"
John and his family live in Fort Pierce and they attend St. Anastasia Catholic Church. John's parents are Tina and Gerry and he has one sister, Jordan, who is in 6th grade. John has quite a few pets. He has a pig, six chickens and a few
cows...but no cats or dogs!
John enjoys playing Wii and football. He is looking forward to his summer vacation when he will relax and do some swimming in upstate New York.
Congratulations to John Salerno, our Student of the Day for Monday, May 17!

Superintendent Sister Joan Celebrates Her 50th Anniversary!
|
The Dawson girls in the fall of 1947. First grader Joan is pictured in the middle.
 |
Sister Joan Dawson was never one to break the rules. But on
her first day of First Grade at Our Lady of Good Council Elementary School, she
informed her mother that she would not be going to bed at her 7:30 p.m.
bedtime. Why? The nuns said, "First graders had to be in bed by 7 p.m.!" Sister Joan, the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese
of Palm Beach, will celebrate her 50th Jubilee this year as a
religious. Today, St. Anastasia Catholic School hosted the monthly Diocesan
Principals' Meeting and surprised Sister Joan with a celebration in her honor.
Our students presented spiritual bouquets, the band performed and lunch was
provided to recognize this outstanding milestone. Sister Joan will celebrate
her Jubilee at the Franciscan Motherhouse in Olean, New York
on May 30, 2010. Left: Sister Joan's Class of 1959 Senior Picture; Right: Sister Joan at Christmas in 1960 at the OSF Motherhouse.
Born in Rochester,
New York in 1941, Sr. Joan was
one of three children raised by her mother. Sr. Joan's father died when she was
6 years old. She attended Catholic schools growing up and completed her studies
at Bonaventure University
in Olean, New
York in three years. She graduated magna cum laude
while at the same time had entered the Sisters of St. Francis (OSF) in
September 1959. She earned her Masters Degree in English from Notre Dame University
in 1968 and graduated from Wayne State University
in Detroit with
her Ph. D. in Education in 1970. After Sr. Joan made her Final Profession, she taught in
Franciscan High Schools in New York and New Jersey. She later
moved to Florida to become the assistant
principal of Bishop Verot High School
in Fort Myers.
After that, she became the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools in St. Petersburg. In 1991,
Sr. Joan became the Superintendent for the Diocese of Palm Beach. According to Sr. Joan's younger sister, Kathleen, Sr. Joan
exemplifies many of her mother's traits. "She definitely is a perfectionist
coupled with gracious kindness and love. Joan is a beautiful lady who has a
sense of humor and who always dresses exquisitely." Sister Joan with Bishop Barbarito in February 2006.
 | Needless to say, her sisters, Kathleen and
Dolores, are very
proud of their "sister" - Sister Joan Helen Dawson. The St. Anastasia
Catholic
School and Church Community, as well as the entire Diocese of Palm
Beach, is
also very proud to honor this special lady on her Jubilee!
Congratulations
Sister Joan! |

Summer Campus Service Day
| On Saturday, June
26, St. Anastasia Catholic School and the St. Anastasia Catholic
Church Mens' and Womens' Groups will host a Campus Service Day at school to
landscape and paint. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a jump start on
volunteer hours for the 2010-11 school year, while at the same time, beautifying
the campus of our school. There is no
better way to get to know new friends in the community than to work together for
a good cause. Projects on the agenda this summer include painting
the inside walls of the auditorium,
painting the playground, and general landscaping work by the
playground.
We are also offering an opportunity to earn
volunteer hours for this year
by purchasing and donating paint for our projects. We will send out an e-flash and a reminder regarding the specific paint and colors we need next week. Thank you.
